  3. UK Labour Party votes for motion calling Israel an apartheid state The UK Labour Party Conference has today voted in favour of a motion to identify Israel as a state practicing the crime of apartheid, making it the first major political party in Europe to adopt such a position. The motion commits the Labour party to implementing sanctions including ceasing UK-Israel arms trade and trade with illegal Israeli settlements. "Conference condemns the ongoing Nakba in Palestine, Israel's militarised violence attacking the Al Aqsa mosque, the forced displacements from Sheikh Jarrah and the deadly assault on Gaza," said the motion The motion noted reports by Human Rights Watch and B'Tselem, which earlier in the year reached a landmark conclusion that Israel was practising the crime of apartheid as defined by the UN. The two reports highlighted how Israel's systematic oppression of the Palestinian people amounted to the crime of apartheid. Their conclusions echoed the findings of the UN and prominent experts on international law as well as two former Israeli ambassadors. READ: UK's Liberal Democrats vote to allow visa-free travel for Palestinians Labour members also welcomed the International Criminal Court's decision to hold an inquiry into abuses committed in the occupied Palestinian Territory since 2014. Calling for a boycott of Israel the motion said: "Conference resolves that action is needed now due to Israel's continuing illegal actions and that Labour should adhere to an ethical policy on all UK trade with Israel, including stopping any arms trade used to violate Palestinian human rights and trade with illegal Israeli settlements." "Conference resolves to support 'effective measures' including sanctions, as called for by Palestinian civil society, against actions by the Israeli government that are illegal according to international law," the motion continued noting, in particular, the need to "ensure that Israel stops the building of settlements, reverses any annexation, ends the occupation of the West Bank, the blockade of Gaza, brings down the Wall and respects the right of the Palestinian people, as enshrined in international law, to return to their homes." It urged the Labour Party to "stand on the right side of history and abide by these resolutions in its policy, communications and political strategy". Despite the adoption of the motion it is unclear how the leadership of the Labour party will react to such an unprecedented call. Party leader Keir Starmer has been locked in a bitter row with members who support the application of international law when it comes to the rights of the Palestinian people. Source And Here The Labour Party conference has voted in favour of a motion that references the identification of Israel as a state practicing the crime of apartheid. It is the first time in the history of any major political party in the UK that such a motion has been passed.

  10. The Status of Women in Light of the Sฤซrah By Shaykhul-Hadฤซth, Hadrat Mawlฤnฤ Muhammad Saleem Dhorat hafizahullฤh The life of Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam is an open book inviting every human being to study and benefit from it. His every word calls towards guidance, moderation and justice; his behaviour and the way he interacted with people provides an easy to imitate blueprint for a wholesome and happy social life. No segment of society has been ignored and the rights and duties of each have been demonstrated. The status and honour Allฤh taโ€˜ฤlฤ has given to women, an often misunderstood subject, is one such area that is immediately clarified when the life of Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam is studied. Throughout her life, a woman has a number of roles, one of which is within the family circle. By taking the examples of daughter, sister, wife and mother, we can learn from the practice and teachings of our Beloved Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam, how the female servants of Allฤh taโ€˜ฤlฤ should conduct themselves. The Daughter First and foremost, a woman is a daughter. Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam treated his daughters with respect and love. The books of Sฤซrah note how, when returning from journeys, Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam would first stop at the masjid and then, before going to his abode, he would visit his daughter Sayyidah Fฤtimah radhiyallฤhu โ€˜anhฤ. Before the Battle of Badr, his daughter Sayyidah Ruqayyah radhiyallฤhu โ€˜anhฤ was very ill. His concern for her prompted him to order his son-in-law, Sayyidunฤ โ€˜Uthmฤn ibn โ€˜Affฤn radhiyallฤhu โ€˜anhu, to stay behind in Madฤซnah and care for her. Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam gave glad tidings of his companionship and proximity in Paradise to the one who nurtured two daughters to maturity. The teachings of Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam led to an environment being created wherein people longed to have daughters they could love and cherish, banishing the old custom of burying new-born girls alive out of shame. The Sister Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam did not have a biological sister. However, once when a group from the Banลซ Saโ€˜d came to Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam, a woman came forward and declared that she was the sister of Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam. It was Sayyidah Shaymฤ radhiyallฤhu โ€˜anhฤ, the daughter of the wet-nurse of Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam, Sayyidah Halฤซmah radhiyallฤhu โ€˜anhฤ, and his childhood companion. Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam received his foster sister with the utmost honour; he removed his cloak and spread it on the floor for her to sit on whilst tears rolled down his cheeks and he humbly suggested to her that if she wished to remain with him, she would be treated with honour and love. And if she desired to return to her people he would still look after her. She chose to return but accepted Islฤm. When she returned, Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam gifted her three servants, a maid, some cattle and some goats. The Wife As a wife, a womanโ€™s esteem increases even further. She now has the status of friend, associate, comforter and adviser to her husband. The occasion of receiving the first revelation through the angel Sayyidunฤ Jibraโ€™ฤซl โ€˜alayhis salฤm was a very testing time for Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam. Despite having the option of going to his lifelong friend Sayyidunฤ Abลซ Bakr radhiyallฤhu โ€˜anhu, his uncle (Abลซ Tฤlib) or other elders of the tribe, Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam sought the company of his wife Sayyidah Khadฤซjah radhiyallฤhu โ€˜anhฤ. She in turn did not fail him and proved to be a source of immense support and comfort. Similarly, after the Truce of Hudaybiyyah was struck and the Muslims had to return to Madฤซnah Munawwarah without performing โ€˜umrah, it was the wife of Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam, Sayyidah Ummu Salamah radhiyallฤhu โ€˜anhฤ, whose advice and counsel helped to diffuse a difficult situation. Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam would spend quality time with his wives, talk with them and narrate stories. He taught the believers: The best of you are the ones who are best to their wives. (At- Tirmidhฤซ) The Mother Motherhood brings with it even more respect and honour. Although Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam was an orphan, his teachings regarding the status and rights of the mother are explicit. Paradise lies under the feet of mothers. Oneโ€™s success in the Hereafter is conditional upon honouring and fulfilling the rights of oneโ€™s mother. A person once asked Nabฤซ sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam, โ€˜Who out of all the people is most deserving of my kindness and companionship?โ€™ He (sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam) replied, โ€˜Your mother.โ€™ โ€˜Then who?โ€™ asked the man. โ€˜Your mother,โ€™ he (sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam) replied. โ€˜Then who?โ€™ asked the man. โ€˜Your mother,โ€™ he (sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam) replied. โ€˜Then who?โ€™ asked the man. โ€˜Your father,โ€™ he (sallallฤhu โ€˜alayhi wasallam) replied. (Al- Bukhฤrฤซ) These examples go some way to demonstrate the respect which Islฤm grants to women and also serve to expose the falsehood of allegations that Islฤm despises women or treats them as inferior. Men and women are equal before Allฤh taโ€˜ฤlฤ; both have rights and responsibilities and both must be treated with honour and respect. 12. โ€˜Spoon of Freedomโ€™ Escape tool of 6 Palestinians becomes symbol of resistance AMMAN โ€” Palestinians have always had different symbols to represent their freedom; a spoon is the newest sign that has captured artistsโ€™ and social media usersโ€™ attentions. After the six Palestinians tunnelled out of the high-security Gilboa Prison, reportedly using a spoon, a large number of social media users, influencers and artists have been focusing on the simple tool used in the movie-like escape. The six fugitives included Zakaria Zubeidi, Mahmoud Ardah, Mohammad Ardah, Yacoub Qadri, Ayham Kamamji and Munadel Nfeiat. A Palestinian-Jordanian virtual artist Beesan Arafat, who describes herself as an artist with โ€œsharp edgesโ€, created a piece of art depicting the spoon the six Palestinians used to extricate themselves from the Israeli prison. โ€œThe men evaded 40 prison guards, three watchtowers, two walls, two barbed-wire fences and a pack of sniffer dogs to get to their freedom,โ€ Arafat wrote on her Instagram post. โ€œThey used a rusty spoon to escape one of the most secure jails in the country,โ€ she added. The Jordanian illustrator and graphic designer Abeer Anabtawi shared a post of a watermelon and spoon, which are currently symbols of Palestinian resistance that have gone viral on social media platforms. โ€œThe spoon has become an icon. With a spoon, the six Palestinians obtained their freedom,โ€ wrote Palestinian activist and photographer Abdalafo Bassam on his Instagram post. Also, Twitter user โ€œ@M7rusaโ€ wrote: โ€œRaise the spoon for freedom; raise your spoon for the Palestinian prisoners and Palestineโ€. Samar Khalil, a Palestinian-Jordanian living in Amman, told The Jordan Times on Sunday: โ€œAlthough four of the six prisoners were recaptured, the Palestinian resistance will continue and from now on, the spoon will illuminate the untold stories of Palestiniansโ€. The four prisoners who were recaptured are: Zakaria Zubeidi, Mahmoud Ardah, Mohammad Arda and Yacoub Qadiri. The Jordan Times
