Q. Me: Assalamu Alaykum,

If I didn't make an oath to Allah but made a promise to myself to do something which wasn't obligatory then would there be sin for not fulfilling it?

A. Mufti Ismail Moosa: Wassalam,

If you *verbally* took the words of oath (promise, qassam, Nadhr etc), then you will have to pay Kaffarah if you do not fulfill it.

If you merely thought of an oath, nothing will be binding upon you.

And Allah knows best.

Q. Me: So there's no sin in breaking the promise that one made to onself.

A. Mufti Ismail Moosa: Jee (Yes).

Q. Me: If I just mumble and don't make oath to Allah out loud, would there still be kaffara?

A. Mufti Ismail Moosa: If you could hear yourself, you will have to give kaffarah.
