Sajdah Tilaawah (Prostration Of Recitation Of The Qur'an)

ummtaalib

Recommended Posts

Sajdah tilawat is the sajdah that one has to perform as an obligatory duty when one reads, recites, or hears, in the prayer or outside, some specific verses containing those words. The Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, has observed, "One a person prostrates himself after reading a verse requiring the performance of sajdah, the shaitan starts crying and wailing in a corner, saying: 'Alas! The children of Adam were enjoined to perform sajdah and they carried it out, and become entitled to enter Paradise, but I refused to do so and was condemned to Hell.'" (Muslim and Ibn Majah)

There are four pre-requirements:

1.Purity of body, clothes, and place of sajdah.

2. Covering of satr.

3. Turning your face toward qiblah.

4. Intention of performing sajdah.

Procedure

1. Stand facing the qiblah.

2. Express the necessary intention.

3. Go down for sajdah with Allahu-Akbar.

4. Rise up with Allahu-Akbar after sajdah.

"When you have recited a verse requiring sajdah tilawat, you should go down for sajdah with Allahu-Akbar and rise from sajdah with Allahu-Akbar, which may be performed sitting, though it is preferable to prostrate oneself from the standing position." (Abu Dawood)

Regulations

  • It is obligatory for those persons only who have to perform and observe the prayers (for example it is not obligatory for a child).

  • If a verse requiring a sajdah has been recited inside the prayer, the sajdah has to be performed forthwith, but if the verse is recited outside the prayer, it is preferable to perform sajdah soon afterwards, but one may perform it later as well.

  • If a verse requiring the performance of sajdah has been recited in a particular prayer, it is obligatory to perform the sajdah in the same prayer, neither outside it nor in another prayer. If a sajdah is omitted in forgetfulness, one should ask Allah for forgiveness.

  • If a person hears a verse requiring a sajdah, being recited by the Imam, but joins the congregation when the Imam has already performed it, he will perform the sajdah after completing his prayer. There will be no need for performing the sajdah later if the follower has joined the congregation in the rak'ah in which the sajdah is performed by the Imam.

  • If a person recites a verse requiring a sajdah in the mind but does not utter it aloud or only writes it, he will not be required to perform the sajdah.

  • If the verse requiring a sajdah is recited over and over again in the same sitting, only one sajdah will have to be performed, but if more than one verse requiring sajdahs are recited, the number of sajdahs to be performed will be the same as the number of the verses recited. Similarly, if the verse requiring a sajdah is repeated in different sittings, the number of sajdahs to be performed will be according to the number of sittings.

  • Some ignorant people prostrate themselves on the Qur'an itself when they have recited a verse requiring a sajdah. This is not valid.

Q. If a person passed away and had Sajdah Tilawah that he had not completed in his lifetime, how will the family repay it?

(Query published as received)

A. When one recites a verse of Sajdah of the Qur’an or hears such a verse, it is Wajib (compulsory) to make Sajdah Tilawah.

It is Makrooh (disliked) to delay the Sajdah Tilawah without valid reason.

If one did not fulfill his/her Wajib Sajdah Tilawah before passing away, there is no Fidyah (compensation) for the omitted Sajdahs. The family should make Istighfar (seek Allah’s forgiveness) on behalf of the deceased. (Imdadul Fatawa, Vol:1, Pg: 559)

Sajdah Tilawah due to Listening on Audio Recording

Q. I would like to know if it is necessary to do Sajdah Tilawat if whilst listening to the Quran on a tape/CD, a Sajdah Tilawat ayah is recited.

A. In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

The traditional Hanafi scholars (fuqaha) have stated that there are three situations where the Qur’an recital prostration (sajdah al-tilawah) is not necessary on the listener.

1) Listening to the recitation of a parrot,

2) Listening to the verse of Sajdah by means of echo or reverberation,

3) Listening to the verse recited by an insane person (majnun).

Imam al-Kasani states in his Bada’i al-Sana’i, which is a fundamental reference in Hanafi Fiqh:

“Contrary to the situation where one listens to the verse (ayah) of Sajdah recited by a parrot or listens to it by the echo of a sound, as this is not considered recitation (tilawah). Similarly (m: Sajdah will not be necessary), when one listens to this verse from an insane person, as his recitation is not considered a proper recitation, for he is not competent to judge for himself.” (Bada’i al-Sana’i, 1/186)

Due to the above, contemporary scholars have explained that if an verse of Sajdah was heard on a recording, such as on a tape, CD, etc… then Sajdah al-Tilawah will not be necessary. It is similar to listening to the recitation of a parrot or by reverberation.

However, if it was heard on live broadcast, whether on a Masjid transmitter or a radio, then it will be necessary to perform a Sajdah.

Sajda Tilawat

By Mufti Ebrahim Desai POSTED: 4 SHAWWAL 1422, 19 DECEMBER 2001

Q. 1) If the Ayat of Sajjda is heard while listening to Tape/Radio, is it necessary to perform the Sajjda Tilawat?

A. 1) If the Aayat of Sajdah is heard on tape recorder or played on radio, Sajda Tilaawat is not necessary. If the recitation is live on Radio, Sajda Tilawat is necessary.

Q. 2) During the month of Ramadan the mosque speakers are used in the Taraweeh. The voice is also heard outside the mosque. As the whole Quran is recited in the Taraweeh and obviously Ayaat of Sajjda are also recited. Now a person sitting at his home hears those Ayaat, is he going to perform those Sajjda Tilawat?

A. 2) Yes.

Q. 3) What is the correct way to do Sajda Tilawat? Do we need to say Takbir and give salam to both sides like in salat?

A.) Sajda-e-Tilawat is simply to make sajda by saying Allahu-Akbar, going into sajda, and reciting three times 'Subhaana rabbi-al a'alaa'. There is no need to stand or even raise the hands, as one would do when commencing Salat. There is also no salam on any side after making the sajda. And Allah Knows Best.

Q. Should Sajdah Tilawah be performed immediately after the ayah of sajida or if we wish to perform all 14 at once. Shukran.

A. It is best to perform the Sajdah Tilawah immediately upon reciting the verse of Sajdah. Nevertheless, if it is delayed till one completes the Qur'an and all 14 Sajdahs are done at the end, this will be permissible.

Going for ruku' immediately after coming up from sajda-e-tilaawat

:sl:

Q: I read Surah Alaq in salaah. I did sajdah tilawat and got up from sajda to qiyaam position. Now the question is, can I go into ruku immediately or should I pause for a while in the qiyam position?

A: You should recite few ayaat before going into ruku. If one immediately went into ruku after performing sajda-e-tilaawat without reciting anything, it will be makrooh though the Salaah will be valid.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Amount of Sajdahs to perform when learning an Ayat of Sajdah in Madrassa

Q. At our Maktab, we recite the verses of the Quran and repeat it at least three times with our teacher for teaching and learning purposes. My question is, if we repeat the verses of Sajdah in this way, how many Sajdahs do we make?

Repeating an aayat of sajdah whilst travelling in a car

Q: If a person reads a sajdah aayat many times whilst travelling in a car, does he have to make one sajdah-e-tilawaat or many?

A: If the car is stationary and he repeats the same aayah of sajdah, he will only have to make one sajdah. However, if the car was moving and he repeats the same aayah of sajdah, then he will have to make sajdah according to the number of times he had recited the aayah of sajdah.

Sajdah-e-Tilaawat when memorising

Q: If I am learning a Surah with a sajdah off by heart, then do I have to do the same amount of sajdah tilawat as the amount of times I recite the aayat of sajdah? If I am making more than one sajdah tilawat then how would I do it? Is it the same as in namaz or do I have to do them all separately with intentions in between all of them because I have quite a few to do from before as well?

A:

1. If you have recited a specific aayat of sajdah many times in one sitting, then only one sajdah is waajib upon you. However if you recited two different aayaat of sajdah, then two sajdahs will be compulsory upon you despite how many times you recited the both aayaat in the same sitting.

2. You should make the intention that you are making sajdah for the aayaat of sajdah that you had previously recited and thereafter you should perform the sajdahs. You can make any amount of sajdahs at one time. You will say the takbeer and fall into sajdah and thereafter repeat the takbeer and come up from sajdah. It is mustahab to make the sajdah from the standing posture. However if this is difficult, then it is permissible to perform the sajdah from the sitting posture.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Places of Sajdah in the Qur'an

Q: I do not speak or understand Arabic but I can read the Arabic Quran. How do I know when and where to do Sajdah?

A: In all Qurans there are signs indicating where to make sajda. For example, the word ‘as-sajdah’ will be writtten in Arabic on the margin; likewise, a line will be drawn over the word of sajdah in that verse. Some Qurans have the word as-sajdah written at the end of the verse.

if you are still in doubt then look out for a haafiz or aalim and ask him to mark off the places in your quran where sajda has to be made.

Sajdas of the Qur'an

Q: If you are doing a Quraan katam in Ramadan, is it permissible to just do one sajdah for the sajdas in the Quraan or do you have to do all 14?

A: When making a khatam of the Holy Quran one has to make all 14 sajdas. One sujood won’t suffice for all. You can either make a sajda for each aayat when reading that aayat, or you can make 14 sujood at one time after making the khatam
