The First Ten Days of Zul-Hijjah

By Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat hafizahullah

Significance of the First Ten Days of Zul Hijjah

1. Allah has taken oath of ten nights in Soorah Al-Fajr. According to the majority of the commentators of Qur'ãn, the nights are those of the (first) ten days of Zul Hijjah.

2. Abdullah Ibne 'Abbãs radiyallahu anhu related that the Prophet sallalahu alayhi wasallam said, "Good deeds performed on other days are not superior to those performed on these (first ten days of Zul Hijjah)." The Companions radiyallahu anhum inquired, "Not even Jihãd?" He replied, "Not even jihãd, except for that person who goes out putting himself and his wealth in danger and does not return with anything." (Bukhãri)

3. Abdullah Ibne 'Abbãs radiyallahu anhu narrated that Rasoolullah sallalahu alayhi wasallam said, "On no other days are good deeds more liked by Allah than on these ten days (i.e. The first ten days of Zul Hijjah)." The Sahãbah radiyallahu anhum asked, " O Rasoolullah ! Not even Jihãd in the Way of Allah?" Rasoolullah sallalahu alayhi wasallam replied, "Not even Jihãd in the Way of Allah, except for that person who goes out with his life and wealth and does not return with anything." (Aboo Dãwood, Tirmizi, Ibne Mãjah)

4. Aboo Hurayrah radiyallahu anhu related that Rasoolullah sallalahu alayhi wasallam said, "On no days is the worship of Allah desired more than in the (first) ten days of Zul Hijjah. The fast of each of these days is equal to the fast of a whole year, and the worship of each of these nights is equal to the worship of Laylatul Qadr." (Tirmizi, Ibne Mãjah)

5. The mother of the believers, Hafsah radiyallahu anhaa reports that Rasoolullah sallalahu alayhi wasallam used to fast the (first) nine days of Zul Hijjah. (Nasã'ee, Ahmad, Aboo Dãwood)

6. Abdullah Ibne 'Umar radiyallahu anhu related that Rasoolullah sallalahu alayhi wasallam said, "No days are as weighty with Allah and so liked by Him for good deeds than the first ten days of Zul Hijjah. So on these days increasingly read Subhãnallah, Lã ilãha illallãh, Alhamdulillah and Allahu Akbar." (Musnad Ahmad)

Virtues of the Day of Arafah (9th Zul Hijjah)

1. 'Ã'ishah radiyallahu anhaa reports that Rasoolullah sallalahu alayhi wasallam said, " There is no day in which Allah sets free more souls from the fire of hell than on the day of Arafah. And on that day Allah draws near to the earth and by way of exhibiting His Pride remarks to the angels, 'What is the desire of these (servants of mine)?" (Muslim)

2. Talhah radiyallahu anhu reports that Rasoolullah sallalahu alayhi wasallam said, "Apart from the day of the Battle of Badr there is no day on which the Shaytãn is seen to be more humiliated, more rejected, more depressed and more infuriated, than on the day of Arafah, and indeed all this is only because of beholding the abundance of descending mercy (on the day) and Allah's forgiveness of the great sins of the servants." (Mishkãt)

3. Aboo Qatãdah Al-Ansãri radiyallahu anhu narrated that Rasoolullah sallalahu alayhi wasallam was asked about the fast on the day of Arafah. He said, "It compensates for the (minor) sins of the past and the coming year." (Muslim, Tirmizi, Ibne Mãjah)

Night of 'Eedul Adh'hã

The nights of both 'Eed are described in the Hadeeth as amongst the great and sacred nights in the Muslim calendar. To remain awake on the nights of 'Eed and perform 'ibãdah is a source of great virtue and reward.

1. Aboo Umarah radiyallahu anhu related that 'Ã'ishah radiyallahu anhaa reports that Rasoolullah sallalahu alayhi wasallam said, "Whosoever stays awake and performs 'ibãdah (worship) on the nights of the two 'Eed, with hope for abundant reward (from Allah), his heart will not die on the day (i.e. Qiyãmah) when all hearts will be dead." (Targheeb)

2. Mu'ãz Ibne Jabal radiyallahu anhu relates that Rasoolullah sallalahu alayhi wasallam said, "Jannat is wãjib (incumbent) for those who stay awake with the intention of making 'ibãdah on the following nights: 8th, 9th and 10th of Zul Hijjah, the night of 'Eedul Fitr and the night of the 15th of Sha'bãn." (Targheeb)

Virtues of Qurbãni

Rasoolullah sallalahu alayhi wasallam said, "There is nothing dearer to Allah during the days of Qurbãni than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of Judgement with its horns, hair, and hooves (to be weighed). The sacrifice is accepted by Allah before the blood reaches the ground. Therefore sacrifice with an open and happy heart." (Tirmizi, Ibne Mãjah)

Takbirãt of Tashreeq

The Takbirãt of Tashreeq are:

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar,

Lã ilãha illallãhu wallahu Akbar,

Allahu Akbar, Walil lahil hamd.

"Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no deity besides Allah and Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest and all praises are for Allah only."

It is wãjib for every adult Muslim to recite these Takbirãt of Tashreeq audibly once after every fardh salaah which is performed with jamã'at (congregation) from the Fajr of 9th Zul Hijjah to the 'Asr of 13th Zul Hijjah (i.e. total of 23 salãh).

Mas'alah: It is not wãjib for women and shar'ee travellers. But, if they are performing salãh behind an imãm upon whom it is wãjib, then it will become wãjib upon them too. However it is mustahab for them to recite in any case.

Mas'alah: Women should not say it loudly but softly.

Mas'alah: Takbeer should be recited immediately after concluding the fardh prayer.

THE VIRTUES MONTH OF ZIL HIJJAH

By E ISLAM TEAM

  • Importance of First 10 Days of Zil Hijjah
  • The Takbeeraat of Tashreeq
  • Fasting on the day of Arafah(9 Zil Hijjah)
  • Qurbani / Udhiyya

IMPORTANCE OF FIRST TEN DAYS OF ZIL-HIJJAH

The first ten days of Zul Hijjah are among the most magnificent days in Islamic calendar. The Messenger of Allah, Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: "There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days." (Hadith -Bukhari)

Almighty Allah Ta'ala says, (By the dawn; by the ten nights) (Quran-Al-Fajr 89: 1-2). Ibn `Abbas, ibn az-Zubayr, Mujahid and others of the earlier and later generations are of the opinion that this refers to the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. Ibn Kathir said: "This is the correct opinion." (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 8/413)

The Messenger of Allah, Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, has said, "One fast during these days is equal to the fasting of one complete year, and the worship of one night during this period is equal to the worship of "Lailatul-Qadr".(Hadith-Tirmizi)

Every Muslim should avail oneself of this wonderful opportunity by performing as much Ibadah (acts of worship) as he or she can during this period

THE TAKBEERAAT OF TASHREEQ

It is Wajib (incumbent) for every adult Muslim male to recite the Takbeeraat of Tashreeq after every Fardh Salaat-performed with Jamaat or individually from the Fajr of the 9th of Zul-Hijjah to the Asr of the 13th of Zul Hijjah. The Takbeeraat should be recited once only.

The words of the Takbeeraat of Tashreeq are as follows:

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إلَهَ إلَّا اللَّهُ وَاَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ

Transliteration: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar laa ilaha illallahu wallahu akbar. Allahu Akbar walillaahil hamd.

Translation: “Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no deity besides Allah and Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest and all praises belong to Him Alone.”

NB. Men should recite this Takbeer audibly whilst females should do so softly.

FASTING ON THE DAY OF ARAFAH (9 ZIL HIJJAH)

It was reported from Abu Qutaadah that the Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him) was asked about fasting on the Day of 'Arafah ( 9 Zil Hijjah). He said, "It atones for the sins of the previous year and of the coming year." (Hadith-Muslim)

QURBANI / UDHIYYA

Hazrat Zaid bin Arqam (R.A.) reports that the Companions of Rasulullah (Sallalaho alihe wassallam) asked him:

" Oh Prohpet of Allah (pbuh), what is this sacrifice?" He said: "It is the way of your forefather Ibrahim(AS) ." They asked:"What (reward) is for us therein?" He replied: "There is a reward for every hair (i.e. the reward for meat and useful parts of the animal's body will be very lofty in merit, but there will also be a great reward for the parts which are useless and thrown away such as the hair)." They asked: "For the wool, Ya Rasulullah?" He replied: "There is one reward for every strand of wool." (Hadith:Ahmed, Ibn Majah)

Status of fasting during the ten days of Zul-Hijjah

Q. What is the status of fasting during the ten days of Zul-Hijjah?

A. It is forbidden to fast on Eid-ul-Adha (the 10th of Zul-Hijjah) and the three days of Tashreeq (three days after Eid-ul-Adha: 11th, 12th and 13th of Zul-Hijjah). (Al Ikhtiyaar Li Ta’leelil Mukhtaar 1/125).

Apart from these days, it is recommended (Mustahab) to fast on the first nine days of Zul-Hijjah and, particularly, on the 9th of Zul-Hijjah, the Day of Arafah. (Hindiyyah 1/201)

The Ten Days of Zul-Hijjah

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam has said, “There are no days during which pious actions are more beloved to Allah than during the first ten days of Zul-Hijjah.” The Sahaabah Radhiyallahu Anhum enquired,Is it greater than even Jihad in the path of Allah? Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam replied, “It is even greater than Jihad except that Jihad where a person sacrifices his possessions and even his life in the path of Allah.” (Tirmizi)

The Fast of Youmul Arafah
The 9th day of Zul Hijjah is called Yowmul-Arafah. The fast of Yowmul Arafah has been prescribed by Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam as a most meritorious act. According to the Hadith, the fast of this day becomes a cause of forgiveness for sins committed in the past and future year. (Muslim)

Clipping of nails & Removal of hair
It is Mustahab (preferable, but not obligatory) for a person performing Qurbani to abstain from trimming/removing hair or clipping nails from the commencement of Zul Hijjah (expected date: Friday (after Maghrib) 2nd September 2016) to the time he slaughters his Qurbani animal. Hence, hair and nails should be removed prior to the commencement of Zul-Hijjah.

Dhu’l-Hijjah

The first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah are amongst the days which Allah has granted extra virtue and excellence over other days of the year, to the extent that many ulama are of the opinion that these days are more virtuous than the last ten days of Ramadan, and even the last ten nights of Ramadan, with the exception of Laylatul Qadr.

Rasulullah ﷺ said, “There are no days in which actions are more beloved to Allah than these days, i.e., the ten days (of Dhu’l-Hijjah).”

The Companions asked, “O Messenger of Allah, not even jihad in the path of Allah?” He ﷺ said, “Not even jihad in the path of Allah, except a person who goes out with his life and wealth, but does not return with anything.” (Bukhari, Tirmidhi and others)

These are also the ten nights which Allah swore oath by in Surah al-Fajr, according to some of the exegetes of the Qur’an:

“By the dawn, and ten nights” (Qur’an, 89:1-2)

These blessed days are for us to exert ourselves in the worship and remembrance of Allah, and all acts of obedience.

However, it is very easy for such days to pass by like any ordinary days if we are not focused and have not prepared a programme of action to take full benefit of these moments.

Below are ten steps we can all try to put into practice to maximise the benefit of this blessed season.

Step One

Abundant recitation of the Noble Quran. This can be done in three ways:

1. Recite one juz daily
2. Recite two juz daily
3. Recite three juz daily. This is the best option, as one will complete a whole Quran in these ten days.

Step Two

Going early to the masjid for salah and spending time in du’a, especially asking Allah for well-being (‘aafiyah) in this life and the hereafter. Also, engaging in the remembrance of Allah until salah time.

Step Three

Be more particular about the sunan before and after the five daily salah, and other nawafil, such as ishraaq, tahajjud etc.

Step Four

Three times in particular should be spent in the remembrance of Allah, blessings on the Prophet, recitation of the Quran and du’a:

1. Before Fajr, especially through du’a and seeking forgiveness (istighfaar)

2. After Fajr Salah until sunrise

3. Between Asr and Maghrib Salah

Step Five

Remind family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, and whoever you possibly can regarding the importance of good actions in these days, and you shall also get their full reward, without any decrease in their reward.

Step Six

Fast on these days from 1st Dhu’l-Hijjah until the 9th Dhu’l-Hijjah, as there is extra reward for fasting on these days. And the fast of 9th Dhu’l-Hijjah, the best day of the year according to some hadiths, is a means of forgiveness of minor sins for the previous and coming year (Muslim).

Step Seven

Utilising one’s tongue in good things only, such as the remembrance of Allah, calling towards good, forbidding evil, reconciling between people and speaking to people in a nice manner. More importantly, it is necessary to withhold the tongue from all impermissible statements, such as backbiting, lying, swearing and offending others.

Safeguarding the tongue is an obligation at all times, but increases in importance during such blessed times.

In particular, the Prophet ﷺ encouraged that a person abundantly read the following in these ten days:

سبحان الله والحمد لله ولا إله إلاّ الله والله أكبر

Step Eight

Providing iftaar for those fasting is a means of getting the reward for their fast too, as taught to us by the Prophet ﷺ. So this is a perfect opportunity to gain this reward by feeding those who are fasting.

Remember, this reward is not just achieved by providing a full meal; even giving a sip of water or a date to a fasting person is sufficient to attain this virtue.

Step Nine

Charity, even to the extent of giving a date to a needy person, is a great act of virtue, and spending in the path of Allah during these blessed days will bring a person even closer to Allah.

Try to spend on every day of these blessed ten days. Charity is one of the best means for forgiveness of sins and repelling the anger of Allah.

Step Ten

Make the most of these days by doing any good action you have the opportunity to perform, be it through worship and remembrance, visiting the sick, helping the needy or even smiling at your Muslim brother; do not consider any action to be little, especially in these blessed days.

May Allah Ta’ala give us all the ability to realise the value of these blessed days of Dhu’l-Hijjah and to utilise them to the best of our ability. Aameen.
