Question and Answer:

Q.  Please can you send me something regarding the implications of a Muslim having tattoos on their body from an Islamic perspective?

(Question published as received)

A. It is forbidden for Muslims to draw tattoos or have tattoos drawn. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has cursed the one who draws tattoos and the one who has tattoos drawn on himself.

It is narrated on the authority of Ibn Mas’ood (Radiallahu Anhu) that he said, “May Allah curse those who tattoo, have (their bodies) tattooed, those who request their eyebrows to be plucked and those who create gaps between their teeth. They are changing what Allah has created. Why should I not curse those whom Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has cursed? (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith #: 5943).
