Mālik b. Dīnār said,

❝If the dunyā consisted of temporary gold, and the Hereafter of eternal sand, then a smart person should choose the eternal sand and ignore the temporary gold!”

I say: ‘Well, then how difficult can our choice really be, when we know that the dunyā consists of temporary sand and the Hereafter consists of eternal gold?’❞

(al-Qurṭubī, al-Jāmiʿ li-Aḥkām al-Qurʾān: 20/22)

Play the Long Game  ?

❝ If Allah granted relief to Prophet Yusuf at the first hurdle of his weariness (and fatigue), then contrast that with the treasures of Egypt that came to him... One's trial/tribulation may be prolonged in order to magnify the gifting... Trust in Allah and do not be in haste. ❞

"Offering deeds without ikhlās and without following the Prophet ﷺ is like a traveler who fills his pouch with sand, it only burdens him and brings him no benefit."

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: “The strangest of things is to know Him ﷻ yet not love Him, and that you hear the caller [to salah] but fail to respond, and that you know of the profit to be gained from dealing with Him, yet prefer dealing with others.⠀

That you recognize that severity of His anger, yet oppose Him. That you taste the misery and anguish in disobeying Him, yet abstain from seeking the delight found within obeying Him. ⠀

How can you sense the hollowness in your heart when incessantly delving into trivial speech yet not long for it to be relieved through his remembrance.

How can you experience the sorrow and agony in attaching your heart to other than Him, yet not seek solace in Him and turn back to Him?".

‎And even stranger yet, is that you know that you’re in dire need of Him ﷻ, yet turn away from Him and take part in all that distances you from Him.

(Istifhan)

Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr رحمه الله said:

It used to be said, “People have never honoured themselves with anything [better] than the obedience of Allāh, and they have never dishonoured themselves with anything [worse] than disobedience to Allāh.”

Disobedience is the cause of being made distant and being expelled just like obedience is the cause of [His] proximity and love.

Shu‘bah narrated from Hishām who said Qatādah reported on the authority of Yūnus ibn Jubair:

شُعْبَةُ، وَهِشَامٌ: عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ يُوْنُسَ بنِ جُبَيْرٍ، قَالَ:

We were with Jundub b. ‘Abdillâh Al-Bajalî رضي الله عنه I asked him, “Advise us.”

He said: “I advise you to fear Allāh ﷻ and obey Him (taqwā)

And I advise you to adhere to the Qur’ān,

For it is a light in the dark night and a guidance during the day,

So implement it no matter how much struggle and poverty you have to face.

If a calamity befalls you, put your wealth forward to protect your religion,

And if the calamity continues, put forward your wealth and your life to save your religion [but never risk your religion],

For the ruined is he whose religion is ruined,

And the looted is he whose religion is taken.

And know that there is no poverty after Paradise,

And no riches after the Fire.”

[Siyar Aʿlām ʿl-Nubalāʾ 3/174]

The eminent Sahābi, 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ūd (رضي الله عنه) was asked:

"Teach me some words that are concise and full of benefit." So he replied:

"Do not associate anything with Allāh, and be with the Qur'ān wherever it takes you. Whoever comes with the truth, accept it from him even if he was distant and hated by you. And whoever comes with falsehood, then reject it even if he was close and beloved to you.."
