	<span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 20px; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Being admitted to hospital, particularly for those undergoing surgical procedures, can be a challenging experience. Muslim patients may erroneously assume that being in hospital absolves them from performing Salaah. This may be due to ignorance of the Islamic aspects of Purity and Salaah as well as the various relaxations that Islam affords to the patient.</span>

	<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5;">
		Are you finding yourself in front of your mirror on a regular basis and noting all of your imperfections?  Are you embarrassed to leave the home because of a minor flaw or blemish on your face?  Is plastic surgery on the horizon for you in the near future?  If you answer yes to any of these questions, you may be dealing with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).  The DSM-IV defines BDD as<span> </span><em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic;">“a preoccupation with an imagined defect in appearance. If a slight physical anomaly is present, the person’s concern is markedly excessive. This preoccupation often causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. This preoccupation is not better accounted for by another mental disorder (eg, dissatisfaction with body shape and size in anorexia</em><span> </span><em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic;">nervosa).”</em>
	</p>

	<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5;">
		BDD is distinguished from anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa<a href="http://www.minddisorders.com/Br-Del/Bulimia-nervosa.html" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; color: rgb(0, 129, 168); text-decoration: none; outline: 0px !important;" rel="external nofollow"> </a>, to the extent that patients w anorexia or bulimia disorders are preoccupied with their overall weight and body shape. BDD however focuses on a specific area and is not related to weight or dieting. An example might be an adolescent who thinks that her breasts are too large and wants to have plastic surgery to reduce their size but is otherwise unconcerned about her weight and is eating normally.  Recent statistics indicate a many as 50% of patients diagnosed with BDD undergo plastic surgery to correct their perceived physical defects.
	</p>

	<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5;">
		Individuals with BDD often focus so much on the defect, they often lose sight of the whole self. A person with a pimple on their nose might feel it is considerably larger than it actually is and their reactions fit their perception rather than reality. This may be caused by an error in the visual processing region of your brain.  This visual processing error can lead to low self-esteem, high suicide risk, and repeated cosmetic surgery. Although the symptoms appear psychological in nature, new research by UCLA psychiatrist  Jamie D. Feusner appears to indicate it might actually be linked to problems with seeing the big picture in the brain.
	</p>

	<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5;">
		In the study, subjects were shown blurred pictures of their own faces while inside the fMRI machine. Dr. Feusner observed, compared to healthy control subjects, those subjects identified with BDD showed much less activity in the brain region responsible for forming visual details into composite forms. This inability to see the whole picture generalized to other activities as well, including looking at pictures of houses.  People with BDD tend to have difficulty seeing the whole picture and cannot process the context of what they are looking at.  This perceptual error seems to be the underlying reason individuals suffer from a distorted self image, which defines BDD.

	<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 1.3em 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 20px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; line-height: 1.5; font-weight: 700; font-style: normal; overflow-wrap: break-word;">
		<em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 20px; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic;">Causes of BDD</em>
	</h3>

	<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5;">
		Although recent research points to an error in the visual processing region of the brain, other research indicates the cause might be related to low seratonin levels in the brain. Seratonin, a neurotransmitter produced by the brain, is often associated with depression and mood disorders when levels are below normal in the brain.  Another significant factor in the development of BDD is the influence of the mass media, particularly the role of advertising in spreading images of physically “perfect” men and women. Impressionable young children and adolescents absorb the message that anything short of physical perfection is unacceptable. This may lead to developing distorted perceptions of their own faces and bodies. Family of origin plays an important role in our self perceptions, which can increase our vulnerability to BDD. Children whose parents are obsessed with appearance, dieting, and/or bodybuilding; or who are highly critical of their children’s looks, are at greater risk of developing BDD.  A history of trauma and abuse can also be an additional factor. When an individual with a history of trauma or abuse buries their feelings about the abuse or traumatic incident, the oppressed feelings can emerge in the form of obsessions about physical features. This “reassignment” of feelings is called displacement.  An example that best describes this displacement is an adolescent with a history of physical abuse as a young child becoming obsessed with body building and strength.

	<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5;">
		Individuals with BDD can have symptoms similar to OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) since anxiety is at the root of both disorders.

			<em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic;">Ritualistic Behavior:</em>  Ritualistic behavior refers to actions that the individual performs to manage anxiety and that take up excessive amounts of his/her time. Individuals are frequently upset if someone or something interferes with or interrupts their ritual. For individuals diagnosed with BDD, these ritualistic behaviors may include exercise or makeup routines, assuming specific poses or postures in front of a mirror, etc.

		<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.5;">

		<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.5;">
			<em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic;">Mirror Obsession</em>:  Abnormal behavior around mirrors, large storefront windows, or similar reflecting surfaces is common with individuals with BDD.  A majority of individuals diagnosed with BDD frequently check their appearance in mirrors or spend long periods of time doing so.  A few react in the opposite direction and avoid mirrors when possible.
		</li>
		<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.5;">
			<em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic;">Fishing for Compliments</em>:  Individual with BDD frequently ask for reassurance from others about their appearance.

		<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.5;">
			<em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic;">Self Comparisons</em>:  Individuals with BDD frequently compare their own appearance to others.
		</li>
		<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.5;">
			<em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic;">Social Avoidance</em>:  Due to their insecurities, individual with BDD often avoid activities outside the home, including school and social events*.

		*The loss of functioning resulting from BDD can have serious consequences for the individuals future. Adolescents with BDD often cut school and may be reluctant to participate in sports, youth groups, or hold part-time or summer jobs. Many individuals are unable to remain in school, form healthy relationships, or keep steady jobs.  Adults with muscle dysmorphia have been known to turn down job promotions in order to have more time to focus on their imperfections by working out more at the gym or fitness centers. The economic consequences of BDD can  include overspending on cosmetics, clothing, or plastic surgery.
	</p>

	<h4 style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 1.3em 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 18px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; line-height: 1.5; font-weight: 700; font-style: normal; overflow-wrap: break-word;">

	<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5;">
		Individuals with BDD often respond well to medications such as antidepressants as well as individual therapy using Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). CBT has been found useful in reducing BDD symptoms. With CBT, individuals learn to see themselves in the mirror without the need for negative self talk or tendency to focus on the negative defects. CBT also challenges inaccurate self-perceptions the individual might have about themselves. Relaxation techniques paired with CBT work well for individuals with BDD.
	</p>

	<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5;">
		In more severe cases, hospitalization may be warranted for individuals with BDD.  Since BDD patients have a high rate of self-destructive behavior, including performing surgery on themselves at home (e.g. liposuction followed by skin stapling, removing facial scars with sand paper, or even sawing down their teeth), hospitalization might be the best place for them to get the help they need. Individuals with severe cases of BDD have a high rate of attempted and completed suicide. Out of 100 individuals diagnosed with BDD, 48% have been hospitalized for psychiatric reasons and 30% had made at least one suicide attempt.
	</p>

	<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 1.3em 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 20px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; line-height: 1.5; font-weight: 700; font-style: normal; overflow-wrap: break-word;">
		<em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 20px; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic;">Prevention</em>
	</h3>

	<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5;">
		The best preventive strategy appears to be simply challenging the perception of those afflicted with unrealistic images of themselves. Despite the pervasive influence of the mass media in our lives, we must educate ourselves and our children about the realities of those supposed “perfect” images we are exposed to. Point out the airbrushing and photo-shopping involved in getting models to look a certain way. Most importantly, talk to young children about the pitfalls of trying to look “perfect”. Teach them the importance of being well rounded, mentally and physically. Stop complimenting girls and boys on just their physical appearance and attributes. Compliment them on being smart, kind, compassionate, and generous rather than on being beautiful and cute.  By doing so, you are teaching them to value themselves as a whole rather than a physical part or feature.  Lastly, educate yourself on the symptoms of BDD and pay attention to changes in your children’s dress and behavior. Early intervention is key.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;">

	Anger, as an emotion, is a primary, natural, and mature emotion experienced by all humans at times, and has functional value for survival.  Anger alerts our body to take corrective action when we or someone we care about have felt wronged or mistreated.  Although anger as an emotion is normal, it’s what we do with this emotion that can lead to destructive actions.  Uncontrolled anger can have a negative affect on our physical, mental, and  social well-being.

	Anger is oftentimes a cover for deeper, underlying emotions such as fear and loss of control. We may feel justified when we are angry and feel we know the source of our anger but oftentimes, it’s less about the other person and more about our perceptions.  Personal perception plays a big role in eliciting anger.  If a person<span> </span><em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic;">perceives</em><span> </span>to lose control of a situation, they might get angry despite what the reality of the situation might be.  We often notice when we are happy, a similar situation may not stir the emotion of anger inside of us as when we are irritated, feeling down on ourselves, etc.

	Although anger can at times be constructive, most times it clouds our judgment and creates stress in our lives.  If anger leads to aggressive behavior toward others, it can lead to permanent harm to personal relationships.  Prolonged or excessive anger, deep resentment, and even mild anger has been linked to cardiovascular problems and heart attacks.

	We must learn to pay attention to our anger and explore the underlying emotions related to it such as hurt or fear.  Learning to feel empathy for others and taking the perspective of others is often helpful as well.  For example when driving and experiencing road rage, you can view what might possibly be going on with the other driver.  If you view the driver as ignorant and lacking proper driving skills, you might become enraged but if you view the driver as being sick or elderly, you might not be so quick to lose your temper.  How often have you made mistakes on the road that you did not intent to?  Maybe drove a little too slow while answering your phone or slowed down to hand something to your child in the back seat.  We can imagine the person in front of us making such unintended mistakes as well and therefore not be so harsh in our judgment.  Simply assuming the good intentions of the other person oftentimes has the ability to cool our fires.  Another way to slow the speed of your rage is to think about your expectations of others.  What are you expecting that you aren’t getting?  Is the expectation reasonable?  Can a compromise be made in meeting your expectation?  Can you forgive the short comings of the person you have expectations from?  Many individuals have difficulty forgiving others and would rather hold onto the anger out of revenge and spite or fear they may forget.  Claudia Black, a psychologist says it best when she says “Forgiving is not forgetting, it is remembering and letting go”.  Sometimes we just need to let go of our anger and make the choice to be happy.  Holding onto to anger for the sake of revenge is a useless and destructive habit.

	Unexpressed anger can have destructive consequences not only emotionally and socially, but physically as well.  According to a New York Times article, chronic anger can be more dangerous than smoking and obesity in shortening your life.  Additionally, chronic anger can also rob you of the chance to be happy and simply enjoy life.

	Anger management strategies
</h3>

<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;">
	1.) Learn to recognize your physiological reaction to anger (e.g. increase heart beat, sweaty palms, clenched fists, face feeling flushed, etc.)<br style="box-sizing: border-box;">
	2.) Take a time out and count to 10 backwards when you feel the anger building up.  Breathe deeply 4-5 times in order to allow yourself time to come up with an appropriate reaction or plan to deal with the situation. Also keep in mind the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who said: “The best of you are those who are<u style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span> </span>slow to anger and swift to cool down</u>.” (Tirmidhi)
</p>

<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;">
	3.)  Learn to communicate your feelings and be assertive rather than aggressive.  Express your feelings using “I” messages (e.g. “I am feeling upset right now because I feel what I’m saying is being taken out of context”).<br style="box-sizing: border-box;">
	4.) Learn constructive ways to channel your anger out (e.g. walk away from the situation and clear your head, exercise, meditate, write in a journal, speak into a tape recorder, talk to someone that is not related to the situation in order to get a clearer perspective, etc.). The Prophet (peace be upon him) has also advised us about the benefits of doing the following:
</p>

<ul style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px 2.5em; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; list-style: square; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Roboto; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;"><li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.5;">
		Making Wudu (Ablution): “Anger comes from Satan and Satan was created of fire; and fire is extinguished only with water; so when one of you becomes angry, he should perform ablution.” (Sunan Abu Dawood)
	</li>
	<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.5;">
		Changing Physical Position: “When one of you becomes angry while standing, he should sit down. If the anger leaves him, well and good; otherwise he should lie down.” (Sunan Abu Dawood)
	</li>
</ul><p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;">
	5.) Accept that you can’t change the world or anyone else…you can only change your reaction.  When you give up the idea that you can somehow change a person’s behavior or thoughts you become empowered and in control.  You realize the only thing you have control over is your reaction to the person.  You can choose to laugh about the situation, ignore it, make a joke out of it, or get angry.  All those emotions are under your control and your choice.
</p>

<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;">
	6.) For chronic anger, you might want to look into an anger management program to learn strategies and coping skills in better managing your anger.  Talking to a trained mental health professional is another recommended option.
</p>

<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;">
	“You will not be punished for your anger; you will be punished by your anger”. Buddha
</p>

<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;">
	This is why we are advised in Islam to fight our emotions and hold back our anger. Abu Hurayrah (may God be pleased with him) reported that a man said to the Prophet (peace be upon him), “Advise me.” He said, “Do not become angry.” The man repeated his request several times, and each time the Prophet (peace be upon him) told him, “Do not become angry.” (Al-Bukhari)
</p>

<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;">
	Furthermore, The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The strong man is not the one who can overpower others (in wrestling); rather, the strong man is the one who controls himself when he gets angry.” (Ahmad). And in another tradition he said, “The strongest man is the one who, when he gets angry and his face reddens and his hackles rise, is able to defeat his anger.” (Ahmad)
</p>

<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 22px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; line-height: 1.5; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;">
	These words of wisdom, as with all advice in the Quran and Sunnah of our Prophet (peace be upon him) are meant to help us live better lives.  As the above quote by Buddha states, it’s not necessarily that God will punish us for being angry in the literal sense but that we get punished by our anger.  Chronic anger eats away at us physically and spiritually.  For this reason we are encouraged to control our anger.

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>10<span> </span></strong><strong>Questions regarding Coronavirus</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		In light of the spread of Coronavirus, what is your advice for British Muslims on the following:
	</p>

	<p>
		1) Should we perform Ṣalāh at home or in the Masjid?
	</p>

	<p>
		2) Should we bring our own prayer mat to the Masjid?
	</p>

	<p>
		3) If someone is affected with Coronavirus or is quarantined, what should he do for Jumuʿah Ṣalāh?
	</p>

	<p>
		4) If the government places restrictions on gatherings including on religious places, what is your advice?
	</p>

	<p>
		5) Should we avoid shaking hands with fellow Muslims?
	</p>

	<p>
		6) Are we permitted to travel abroad?
	</p>

	<p>
		7) What is your advice for those who have ʿUmrah and Hajj bookings?
	</p>

	<p>
		8) Do you advise any supplications?
	</p>

	<p>
		9) Should Qunūt Nāzilah be started in Fajr Ṣalāh?
	</p>

	<p>
		10) Do you recommend any other actions during this crisis?
	</p>

	<p>
		<em>(These questions have been combined together for convenience)  </em>
	</p>

	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>Answers</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		These answers reflect the current situation in the UK as of 4 March 2020. The UK has not yet been affected significantly unlike some other countries. Further advice will be shared, should the situation change significantly.
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>1) Should we perform Ṣalāh at home or in the Masjid?</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		People should continue to perform Ṣalāh in the Masjid as normal. If anyone is diagnosed with Coronavirus or there is a real possibility of being affected due to the symptoms, they should perform Ṣalāh at home. This must be based on real symptoms, for example, fever, not just having a minor runny nose, for example.
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>2) Should we bring our own prayer mat to the Masjid?</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		Ṣalāh should continue to be performed as usual in the Masjids on the carpets.
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>3) If someone is affected with Coronavirus or is quarantined, what should he do for Jumuʿah Ṣalāh?</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		A person who is affected with the virus or is quarantined should perform Ẓuhr Ṣalāh. If, however, there are four adult males together in the quarantine or in hospital, and they wish to perform Jumuʿah Ṣalāh, this is permitted. The Khuṭbah (sermon) can be short by reciting Sūrah al-Fātiḥah and a few other Sūrahs of the Qurʾān. There are also short Arabic Khuṭbahs available online which can be used.
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>4) If the government places restrictions on gatherings including on religious places, what is your advice?</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		Currently, there are no restrictions in the UK on gatherings, therefore this question is hypothetical. If any such restrictions are imposed, specific advice will be issued accordingly. Nevertheless, two possible scenarios are outlined:
	</p>

	<p>
		In the event of a complete restriction on gatherings including in religious places, people should perform Ṣalāh at home in congregation with their families. Ẓuhr Ṣalāh will be performed instead of Jumuʿah Ṣalāh. If, however, they wish to perform Jumuʿah Ṣalāh, they can do so, as long as there are four adult males including the Imam.
	</p>

	<p>
		If partial restrictions are imposed, for example less than 50 people can gather, then multiple congregations should be arranged in one Masjid, particularly for Jumuʿah Ṣalāh, with the times staggered. In this scenario, it will be permitted to have multiple congregational prayers in the same Masjid due to necessity. Each community would coordinate this according to their size and also make use of halls and rooms in the Masjid as necessary.
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>5) Should we avoid shaking hands with fellow Muslims?</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		The emphasised Sunnah is the Islamic greeting of Assalāmu ʿalaykum. Shaking hands (muṣafaḥah) is desirable, however, not mandatory or emphasised in the same way as the verbal greeting of Salām.
	</p>

	<p>
		Therefore, if a person is diagnosed or thinks he may be affected with this virus, he should avoid shaking hands and suffice with the verbal Salām. Otherwise, there is no need to abstain from shaking hands and people should continue handshakes as usual. As Muslims, we wash our hands many times a day during ablution, before and after eating, and otherwise.
	</p>

	<p>
		Nevertheless, if, someone decides not to shake his hands, a person should not be offended. Those who decide to avoid the handshake should suffice with the verbal Salām without making any other physical gestures or using other body parts.
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>6) Are we permitted to travel abroad?</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		The Prophet ﷺ said, “If you hear of an [outbreak of] plague in a land, do not enter it; and if the plague occurs in a place while you are in it, do not leave that place” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 5728). Therefore, those living in the UK must avoid those areas of the world which have been affected severely. The advice of the Foreign Office and medical professionals in this regard should be noted. Generally, it is advised that all unnecessary international travel is avoided.
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>7) What is your advice for those who have ʿUmrah and Hajj bookings?</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		People with ʿUmrah and Hajj bookings should follow the advice of the Saudi authorities. Currently, ʿUmrah has been suspended until mid-April. People should be content with the decree of Allah Almighty and note that actions are according to intentions, and all those who intended to travel for ʿUmrah, will attain its reward, inshāʾ Allah.
	</p>

	<p>
		The situation for Ramaḍān and Hajj is not yet clear and people should wait for official advice. If limited quotas are placed for Hajj, priority should be given to those performing their obligatory Hajj.
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>8) Do you advise any supplications?</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		There are many relevant masnūn supplications. A few are mentioned here:
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<em><strong>Supplication 1</strong></em>
	</p>

	<p>
		Anas ibn Mālik (d. 93/711-2, may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet ﷺ would say:
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبَرَصِ وَالْجُنُونِ وَالْجُذَامِ وَمِنْ سَيِّئِ الأَسْقَامِ</strong>
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<em>‘O Allah, I seek refuge in You from vitiligo, madness, leprosy, and bad diseases’<span> </span></em>(Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 1554, the ḥadīth is ṣaḥīḥ)
	</p>

	<p>
		This supplication should be read regularly at all times.
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<em><strong>Supplication 2</strong></em>
	</p>

	<p>
		ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān (d. 35/656, may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever reads three times in the morning and evening:
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>بِسْمِ اللهِ الَّذِي لاَ يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الأَرْضِ وَلاَ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيم</strong>
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<em>‘In the Name of Allah, by whose Name nothing in the earth or the heaven is harmed, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing’</em>, nothing will harm him (Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 3388; Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 5088, the ḥadīth is ṣaḥīḥ).
	</p>

	<p>
		This supplication should be read thrice in the morning and thrice in the evening.
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<em><strong>Supplication 3</strong></em>
	</p>

	<p>
		ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (d. 73/693, may Allah be pleased with him) said, “The Prophet ﷺ would not abandon these words in the evening and the morning:

	<p>
		This supplication should be read at least once in the morning and once in the evening.
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>9) Should Qunūt Nāzilah be started in Fajr Ṣalāh?</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		Scholars have mixed views regarding Qunūt Nāzilah due to such outbreaks. The ḥanbalīs suggest it is not established because when such incidents occurred in the era of the companions, there is no mention of Qunūt Nāzilah in the ḥadīths. On the other hand, the ḥanafīs and shāfiʿīs encourage Qunūt Nāzilah during such outbreaks.
	</p>

	<p>
		Given the suffering of the Ummah, Qunūt Nāzilah should already be read regularly as outlined in an<span> </span><a href="https://islamicportal.co.uk/qunut-nazilah/" style="background-color:transparent;color:#056bb1;" rel="external nofollow">earlier answer</a>, and therefore it is highly recommended to incorporate the supplications pertaining to the outbreak in the Qunūt.
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		<strong>10)<span> </span></strong><strong>Do you recommend any other actions during this crisis?</strong>
	</p>

	<p>
		A Muslim should reflect on this global outbreak and realise that this is a reminder from Allah to awaken our hearts. Allah Almighty is The Almighty and Powerful. Nothing happens without His decree. The human being is very weak. Despite advancements in science and technology, the world powers have been unable to prevent its spread and stop the deaths.
	</p>

	<p>
		Death is a reality and our stay in this world is for a short period. We should turn to Allah and repent for our sins and pledge to abstain from sins and spend a life in accordance with Islamic teachings. Some of the specific actions include:
	</p>

	<ul>
<li>
			Repent to Allah Almighty.
		</li>
		<li>
			Contemplate death and prepare for the hereafter.
		</li>
		<li>
			Supplicate to Allah Almighty with the aforementioned supplications and other supplications.
		</li>
		<li>
			Perform two rakʿat nafl Ṣalāh regularly and supplicate to Allah Almighty therein and thereafter for protection. This Ṣalāh is to be performed individually.
		</li>
		<li>
			Remember Allah continuously and engage in His remembrance, in particular takbīr and tasbīḥ.
		</li>
		<li>
			Read durūd in abundance.
		</li>
		<li>
			Give optional charity, as charity removes calamities.
		</li>
		<li>
			Keep the gaze lowered and avoid all obscene statements and actions. A ḥadīth from the Prophet ﷺ mentions, “Immorality never appears among a people to such an extent that they commit it openly, but plagues and diseases that were never known among the predecessors will spread among them” (Sunan Ibn Mājah, 4019; declared ṣaḥīḥ in al-Mustadrak, 8623).
		</li>
	</ul>
<p>
		Finally, if a person is diagnosed with this virus, he should believe that this is from Allah Almighty, The Wise who has decided to test him, and that if he exercises patience he will be rewarded and his sins will be forgiven. If a Muslim dies in this illness, he is afforded the status of a martyr.
	</p>

	<p>
		Although medical professionals will attempt to identify the source of the disease, which is understandable to contain the disease, we should avoid attributing blame and believe that everything occurs with the decree and power of Allah Almighty.
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		عن أنس مرفوعا: لا عدوى ولا طِيَرة، ويعجبني الفأل الصالح: الكلمة الحسنة، رواه البخاري (٥٧٥٦). وعن أبي هريرة مرفوعا: لا عدوى ولا طيرة، ولا هامة ولا صفر، وفر من المجذوم كما تفر من الأسد، رواه البخاري (٥٧٠٧). وعن أبي هريرة مرفوعا: لا عدوى ولا صفر ولا هامة، فقال أعرابي: يا رسول الله، فما بال إبلي، تكون في الرمل كأنها الظباء، فيأتي البعير الأجرب فيدخل بينها فيجربها؟ فقال: فمن أعدى الأول؟ رواه البخاري (٥٧١٧). وعن أبي هريرة مرفوعا: لا يوردن ممرض على مصح، رواه البخاري (٥٧٧١). وعن أبي هريرة مرفوعا: المبطون شهيد، والمطعون شهيد، رواه البخاري (٥٧٣٣). وعن أسامة بن زيد مرفوعا: إذا سمعتم بالطاعون بأرض فلا تدخلوها، وإذا وقع بأرض وأنتم بها فلا تخرجوا منها، رواه البخاري (٥٧٢٨). قال محمد في الموطأ (٩٥٥): هذا حديث معروف قد روي عن غير واحد، فلا بأس إذا وقع بأرض أن لا يدخلها اجتنابا له، انتهى. وعن ابن عباس مرفوعا: لا ضرر ولا ضرار، رواه ابن ماجه (٢٣٤٠) بسند فيه جابر الجعفي، ورواه الحاكم (٢٣٤٥) من حديث أبي سعيد الخدري وصححه على شرط مسلم وأقره الذهبي. وعن ابن عمر مرفوعا: من أكل من هذه الشجرة – يعني الثوم – فلا يقربن مسجدنا، رواه البخاري (٨٥٣)۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		قال الخطابي في شرح البخاري (٣/٢١١٨): قوله: لا عدوى، يريد أن شيئا لا يعدى من قبل ذاته وطبعه، وما كان من ضرر وفساد فإنما هو بمشيئة الله وقضائه وقدره، ولذلك قال صلى الله عليه وسلم حين قيل: جرب بعير، فأجرب مائة بعير، فمن أعدى الأول، يريد أن الأول إذا كان مضافا إلى الله عز وجل، فالثاني بمثابته. وقد قيل في هذا وجه آخر، وهو أن المراد به بعض الأدواء والعاهات دون بعض، وذلك كالطاعون يقع ببلد فيهرب منه خوفا من العدوى، فنهى عنه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وقال: إذا كان ببلد فلا تدخلوه، وإذا كان بالبلد الذي أنتم به فلا تخرجوا منه، أي: كأنكم تظنون أن الفرار من قدر الله ينجيكم منه، ومعنى قوله: لا تدخلوه، أي: ليكون أسكن لنفوسكم وأطيب لعيشكم، انتهى۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		وقال في معالم السنن (٤/٢٣٤): وليس المعنى في النهي عن هذا الصنيع من أن المرضى تعدي الصحاح، ولكن الصحاح إذا مرضت بإذن الله وتقديره وقع في نفس صاحبه أن ذلك إنما كان من قبل العدوى، فيفتنه ذلك ويشككه في أمره، فأمر باجتنابه والمباعدة عنه لهذا المعنى. وقد يحتمل أن يكون ذلك من قبل الماء والمرعى، فتستوبله الماشية، فإذا شاركها في ذلك الماء الوارد عليها أصابه مثل ذلك الداء، والقوم بجهلهم يسمونه عدوى، وإنما هو فعل الله تبارك وتعالى بتأثير الطبيعة على سبيل التوسط في ذلك، انتهى۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		وقال ابن بطال في شرح البخاري (٢/٤٦٦): وفيه: دليل أن كل ما يتأذى به كالمجذوم وشبهه يبعد عن المسجد وحلق الذكر، وقد قال سحنون: لا أرى الجمعة تجب على المجذوم، واحتج بقوله عليه السلام: من أكل من هذه الشجرة فلا يقربن مسجدنا، وأفتى أبو عمر أحمد بن عبد الملك بن هاشم في رجل شكا جيرانه أنه يؤذيهم في المسجد بلسانه، قال: يخرج عن المسجد، ويبعد عنه، ونزع بهذا الحديث، وقال: أذاه أكثر من أذى الثوم، وهذا الحديث أصل في نفي كل ما يتأذى به، انتهى۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		وقال العيني في عمدة القاري (٦/١٤٦) تبعا لابن الملقن في التوضيح (٧/٣٤٢): ويلحق بما نص عليه في الحديث كل ما له رائحة كريهة من المأكولات وغيرها، وإنما خص الثوم هنا بالذكر، وفي غيره أيضا بالبصل والكراث لكثرة أكلهم بها، وكذلك ألحق بذلك بعضهم من بفيه بخر، أو به جرح له رائحة، وكذلك القصاب والسماك والمجذوم والأبرص أولى بالإلحاق، وصرح بالمجذوم ابن بطال. ثم نقل العيني كلامه المذكور. وكلام العيني حكاه ابن عابدين في رد المحتار (١/٦٦١) ملخصا وأقره۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		وقال ابن بطال في شرح البخاري (٩/٤١٢): قال ابن حبيب: وكذلك يمنع المجذوم من المسجد والدخول بين الناس واختلاطه بهم كما روي عن عمر أنه مر بامرأة مجذومة تطوف بالبيت فقال لها: يا أمة الله، اقعدي في بيتك ولا تؤذي الناس، انتهى۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		وقال النووي في شرح مسلم (١٤/١٧٣): قال القاضي: في هذا الحديث من الفقه ما قاله بعض العلماء أنه ينبغي إذا عرف أحد بالإصابة بالعين أن يجتنب ويتحرز منه، وينبغي للإمام منعه من مداخلة الناس ويأمره بلزوم بيته، فإن كان فقيرا رزقه ما يكفيه ويكف أذاه عن الناس، فضرره أشد من ضرر آكل الثوم والبصل الذي منعه النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم دخول المسجد، لئلا يؤذي المسلمين، ومن ضرر المجذوم الذي منعه عمر رضي الله عنه والعلماء بعده الاختلاط بالناس، ومن ضرر المؤذيات من المواشي التي يؤمر بتغريبها إلى حيث لا يتأذى به أحد، وهذا الذي قاله هذا القائل صحيح متعين ولا يعرف عن غيره تصريح بخلافه، انتهى. وقال (١٤/٢٢٨): قال القاضي: قالوا: ويمنع من المسجد والاختلاط بالناس، قال: وكذلك اختلفوا في أنهم إذا كثروا هل يؤمرون أن يتخذوا لأنفسهم موضعا منفردا خارجا عن الناس ولا يمنعوا من التصرف في منافعهم، وعليه أكثر الناس، أم لا يلزمهم التنحي، قال: ولم يختلفوا في القليل منهم في أنهم لا يمنعون، قال: ولايمنعون من صلاة الجمعة مع الناس ويمنعون من غيرها. قال: ولو استضر أهل قرية فيهم جذمى بمخالطتهم في الماء، فإن قدروا على استنباط ماء بلا ضرر أمروا به، وإلا استنبطه لهم الآخرون، أو أقاموا من يستقى لهم وإلا فلا يمنعون، انتهى. وراجع إكمال المعلم (٧/٨٥ و ١٦٤) للقاضي عياض۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		وقال ابن نجيم في البحر الرائق (٢/١٨١): قوله (كالخسوف والظلمة والريح والفزع) أي حيث يصلي الناس فرادى، لأنه قد خسف القمر في عهده عليه السلام مرارا، ولم ينقل أنه جمع الناس له ولأن الجمع فيه متعسر كالزلازل والصواعق وانتشار الكواكب والضوء الهائل بالليل والثلج والأمطار الدائمة وعموم الأمراض والخوف الغالب من العدو ونحو ذلك من الأفزاع والأهوال، لأن ذلك كله من الآيات المخوفة، والله تعالى يخوف عباده ليتركوا المعاصي ويرجعوا إلى الطاعة التي فيها فوزهم وخلاصهم، وأقرب أحوال العبد في الرجوع إلى ربه الصلاة، انتهى۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		وقال ابن نجيم في الأشباه والنظائر (ص ٣٣١): فائدة في الدعاء برفع الطاعون: سئلت عنه في طاعون سنة تسع وستين وتسع مائة بالقاهرة فأجبت بأني لم أره صريحا، ولكن صرح في الغاية وعزاه الشمني إليها بأنه إذا نزل بالمسلمين نازلة. قنت الإمام في صلاة الفجر، وهو قول الثوري وأحمد، وقال جمهور أهل الحديث: القنوت عند النوازل مشروع في الصلاة كلها، انتهى. وفي فتح القدير أن مشروعية القنوت للنازلة مستمر لم ينسخ، وبه قال جماعة من أهل الحديث، وحملوا عليه حديث أبي جعفر عن أنس رضي الله عنه: ما زال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقنت حتى فارق الدنيا، أي عند النوازل، وما ذكرنا من أخبار الخلفاء يفيد تقرره لفعلهم ذلك بعده صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم، وقد قنت الصديق رضي الله عنه في محاربة الصحابة رضي الله عنهم مسيلمة الكذاب وعند محاربة أهل الكتاب، وكذلك قنت عمر رضي الله عنه، وكذلك قنت علي رضي الله عنه في محاربة معاوية، وقنت معاوية في محاربته، انتهى. فالقنوت عندنا في النازلة ثابت. وهو الدعاء برفعها. ولا شك أن الطاعون من أشد النوازل، قال في المصباح: النازلة المصيبة الشديدة تنزل بالناس، انتهى. وفي القاموس: النازلة الشديدة، انتهى. وفي الصحاح: النازلة الشديدة من شدائد الدهر تنزل بالناس، انتهى، وذكر في السراج الوهاج: قال الطحاوي: ولا يقنت في الفجر، عندنا من غير بلية، فإن وقعت بلية فلا بأس به كما فعل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فإنه قنت شهرا فيها، يدعو على رعل وذكوان وبني لحيان ثم تركه، كذا في الملتقط، انتهى. فإن قلت: هل له صلاة؟ قلت: هو كالخسوف لما في منية المفتي قبيل الزكاة: في الخسوف والظلمة، في النهار واشتداد الريح والمطر والثلج والأفزاع وعموم المرض يصلي وحدانا، انتهى. ولا شك أن الطاعون من قبيل عموم المرض، فتسن له ركعتان فرادى، وذكر الزيلعي في خسوف القمر أنه يتضرع كل واحد لنفسه، وكذا في الظلمة الهائلة بالنهار والريح الشديدة والزلازل والصواعق وانتشار الكواكب والضوء الهائل بالليل والثلج والأمطار الدائمة وعموم الأمراض والخوف الغالب من العدو ونحو ذلك من الأفزاع والأهوال، لأن كل ذلك من الآيات المخوفة، انتهى. فإن قلت: هل يشرع الاجتماع للدعاء برفعه كما يفعله الناس بالقاهرة بالجبل؟ قلت: هو كخسوف القمر، وقد قال في خزانة المفتين: والصلاة في خسوف القمر تؤدى فرادى، وكذلك في الظلمة والريح والفزع، لا بأس بأن يصلوا فرادى ويدعون ويتضرعون إلى أن يزول ذلك، انتهى. فظاهره أنهم يجتمعون للدعاء والتضرع، لأنه أقرب إلى الإجابة، وإن كانت الصلاة فرادى، وفي المجتبى في خسوف القمر: وقيل: الجماعة جائزة عندنا لكنها ليست سنة، انتهى، وفي السراج الوهاج: يصلي كل واحد لنفسه في خسوف القمر وكذا في غير الخسوف من الأفزاع كالريح الشديدة والظلمة الهائلة من العدو والأمطار الدائمة والأفزاع الغالبة، وحكمها حكم خسوف القمر، كذا في الوجيز، وحاصله: أن العبد ينبغي له أن يفزع إلى الصلاة عند كل حادثة، فقد كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا أحزنه أمر صلى،، انتهى، وذكر شيخ الإسلام العيني رحمه الله في شرح الهداية: الريح الشديدة والظلمة الهائلة بالنهار والثلج والأمطار الدائمة والصواعق والزلازل وانتشار الكواكب والضوء الهائل بالليل وعموم الأمراض وغير ذلك من النوازل والأهوال والأفزاع إذا وقعن، صلوا وحدانا وسألوا وتضرعوا، وكذا في الخوف الغالب من العدو، انتهى. فقد صرحوا بالاجتماع والدعاء بعموم الأمراض، وقد صرح شارحو البخاري ومسلم والمتكلمون على الطاعون كابن حجر بأن الوباء اسم لكل مرض عام وأن كل طاعون وباء، وليس كل وباء طاعونا، انتهى، فتصريح أصحابنا بالمرض العام بمنزلة تصريحهم بالوباء وقد علمت أنه يشمل الطاعون. وبه علم جواز الاجتماع للدعاء برفعه، لكن يصلون فرادى ركعتين ينوي ركعتي رفع الطاعون. وصرح ابن حجر بأن الاجتماع للدعاء برفعه بدعة وأطال الكلام فيه، انتهى۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		ووافقه ابن عابدين في رد المحتار (٢/١١) قال: قوله (إلا لنازلة) قال في الصحاح: النازلة الشديدة من شدائد الدهر، ولا شك أن الطاعون من أشد النوازل، أشباه، انتهى. وراجع فيه (٢/١٨٣). وهذا هو الذي جزم به الشافعية، قال النووي في شرح المهذب (٣/٤٩٤): الصحيح المشهور الذي قطع به الجمهور ان نزلت بالمسملين نازلة كخوف أو قحط أو وباء أو جراد أو نحو ذلك قنتوا في جميعها وإلا فلا، انتهى۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		والمرجح عند الحنابلة أن لا يقنت لدفع الوباء، قال ابن مفلح في الفروع (٢/٣٦٧): ويتوجه لا يقنت لدفع الوباء في الأظهر، ش، لأنه لم يثبت القنوت في طاعون عمواس ولا في غيره، ولأنه شهادة للأخبار، فلا يسأل رفعه، انتهى. وأقره البرهان بن مفلح في المبدع (٢/١٧) والمرداوي في الإنصاف (٢/١٧٥)۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		وجاء في الأصل (١/٣١١): قلت: أرأيت إماما خطب الناس يوم الجمعة ففزع الناس، فذهبوا كلهم إلا رجلا واحدا بقي معه، كم يصلي الإمام؟ قال: يصلي أربع ركعات، إلا أن يبقى معه ثلاثة رجال سواه فيصلي بهم الجمعة، وذلك أدنى ما يكون، انتهى. وصرح بنحوه في الجامع الصغير (ص ١١٢). وقال ابن قطلوبغا في التصحيح (ص ١٨٤) وأقره ابن عابدين (٢/١٥١): رُجح في الشروح دليله، واختاره المحبوبي والنسفي، انتهى۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		<strong>فائدة:<span> </span></strong>قال ابن قتيبة في المعارف (١/٦٠١): حدثني أبو حاتم، عن الأصمعي، قال: أول طاعون في الإسلام طاعون عمواس بالشام، فيه مات معاذ بن جبل، وامرأتاه وابنه، وأبو عبيدة بن الجراح. وطاعون شيرويه بن كسرى بالعراق، في زمن واحد، وكانا جميعا في زمن عمر بن الخطاب. وبين طاعون شيرويه وبين طاعون عمواس مدة طويلة. ثم طاعون الجارف في زمن ابن الزبير سنة تسع وستين، وعلى البصرة يومئذ عبيد الله بن عبد الله بن معمر، ثم طاعون الفتيات، لأنه بدأ في العذارى والجواري بالبصرة، وبواسط وبالشام وبالكوفة، والحجاج يومئذ بواسط في ولاية عبد الملك بن مروان، ومات فيه عبد الملك بن مروان، أو بعده بقليل، ومات فيه أمية بن خالد بن عبد الله بن خالد بن أسيد، وعلي بن أصمع، وصعصعة بن حصن، وكان يقال له: طاعون الأشراف. ثم طاعون عدى بن أرطاة سنة مائة. ثم طاعون غراب سنة سبع وعشرين ومائة، وغراب رجل من الرباب، وكان أول من مات فيه في ولاية الوليد بن يزيد بن عبد الملك. ثم طاعون سلم بن قتيبة سنة إحدى وثلاثين ومائة في شعبان وشهر رمضان، وأقلع في شوال، ومات فيه أيوب السختياني. قال: وقال الأصمعي مرة أخرى: وقع طاعون سلم بالعراق يوم الخروج، يعنى يوم العيد، سنة إحدى وثلاثين، وبالشام سنة خمس وثلاثين، وكان إذا فتح أفرق منه صاحبه. وفي طاعون الأشراف يقول الشاعر:۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:center;">
		وما ترك الطاعون من ذي قرابة ، إليه إذا كان الإياب يؤوب
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		ولم يقع بالمدينة ولا بمكة طاعون قط، انتهى كلام ابن قتيبة۔
	</p>

	<p style="text-align:right;">
		وراجع رسالة السيوطى: ما رواه الواعون في أخبار الطاعون، وهي مطبوعة من دار القلم دمشق۔

</p>

<p>
	Most common brushing myths:
</p>

<p>
	<span>1. We should brush first thing in the morning - No, brushing should be done after the breakfast. This cleans the food debris left in our mouth after the breakfast. </span>
</p>

<p>
	2. A larger brush cleans mouth effectively - No, a smaller brush can reach more areas and hence results in a better cleaning.
</p>

<p>
	3. The whole tooth brush should be covered with toothpaste for good brushing - No, just a pea size amount on your brush is more than enough for effective cleaning.
</p>

<p>
	4. Electric tooth brushes are better than manual tooth brush - Absolutely wrong! An electric brush doesn't know where you need more cleaning. With a manual brush, you can clean up yourself with manual pressures
</p>

<p>
	5. Medicated toothpastes ( like medicare &amp; sensodyne) can be used as a regular toothpaste - These toothpastes have chemicals that are to relieve some dental problems.
</p>

<p>
	6. More aggressive brushing means more clean teeth - Again, absolutely wrong! Brushing should be done vertically with minimum pressure. This makes both teeth and gums healthy.

		<strong><span>CORONAVIRUS</span></strong>
	</h2>

	<p>

	</p>

	<p>
		The illness was first reported in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a major city in central China, and has been rapidly spreading.
	</p>

	<p>
		The name of coronavirus comes from its shape, which resembles a crown or solar corona when imaged using an electron microscope.
	</p>

	<p>
		Coronavirus is in the same family of viruses as the well-known severe<span> </span><strong>acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV)</strong><span> </span>and<span> </span><strong>Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV)</strong>, which have killed hundreds of people in the last 17 years.
	</p>

	<p>
		Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people.  Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.
	</p>

	<p>
		Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.
	</p>

	<p>
		Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.

		<span>EXAMPLE FROM THE LIFE OF UMAR BIN AL-KHATTAB RA</span>
	</h2>

	<p style="text-align:justify;">
		Narrated `Abdullah bin `Abbas:`Umar bin Al-Khattab departed for Sham and when he reached Sargh, the commanders of the (Muslim) army, Abu ‘Ubaida bin Al-Jarrah and his companions met him and told him that an epidemic had broken out in Sham. `Umar said, “Call for me the early emigrants.” So `Umar called them, consulted them and informed them that an epidemic had broken out in Sham. Those people differed in their opinions. Some of them said, “We have come out for a purpose and we do not think that it is proper to give it up,” while others said (to `Umar), “You have along with you. other people and the companions of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) so do not advise that we take them to this epidemic.” `Umar said to them, “Leave me now.” Then he said, “Call the Ansar for me.” I called them and he consulted them and they followed the way of the emigrants and differed as they did. He then said to them, Leave me now,” and added, “Call for me the old people of Quraish who emigrated in the year of the Conquest of Mecca.” I called them and they gave a unanimous opinion saying, “We advise that you should return with the people and do not take them to that (place) of epidemic.” So `Umar made an announcement, “I will ride back to Medina in the morning, so you should do the same.” Abu ‘Ubaida bin Al-Jarrah said (to `Umar), “Are you running away from what Allah had ordained?” `Umar said, “Would that someone else had said such a thing, O Abu ‘Ubaida! Yes, we are running from what Allah had ordained to what Allah has ordained. Don’t you agree that if you had camels that went down a valley having two places, one green and the other dry, you would graze them on the green one only if Allah had ordained that, and you would graze them on the dry one only if Allah had ordained that?” At that time `Abdur-Rahman bin `Auf, who had been absent because of some job, came and said, “I have some knowledge about this. I have heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, ‘If you hear about it (an outbreak of plague) in a land, do not go to it; but if plague breaks out in a country where you are staying, do not run away from it.’ ” `Umar thanked Allah and returned to Medina.

	<span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">We are commanded by Allah the Almighty, to pray five times a day. However, apart from the blessings and benefit we gain from Salaah in the Hereafter, does it have health benefits as well?</span>

</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">According to an article, during Salaah when you go into sujood, extra blood flows to your brain. Extra blood supply to the skin on your face helps prevent diseases, drains the sinuses and makes it less likely for you to get bronchitis. When a person breathes normally, only two thirds of the capacity of the lung is exhaled out and the remaining one third remains in the lung as a residual air. During sujood, the abdominal visra press against the diaphragm. The latter presses against the lower part of the lungs and the lower lobes. When you breathe during sujood, the remaining one third residual air is aired out, helping your lungs remain in a healthy state. </span>

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<i><span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;color:red;">As Muslims, we do not pray with the intention of gaining these health benefits, but rather, to worship the Almighty Allah. These benefits are mere side dishes, while worshiping and getting closer to Allah is our main dish.</span></i>

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">We also know that eating excessively can cause numerous diseases such as diabetes, vascular diseases, stroke, heart attack etc., and that moderation is the key. </span><i><span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;color:#7030A0;">“Eat and drink, but avoid excess”. </span></i><b><span style="font-size:8.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">(20: 81)</span></b>

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">Challenge your brain. Mental activity not only improves your intelligence, but your brain is the centre of everything in your body. If it is healthy, then you are less at risk to attract diseases.</span>

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">The first word revealed in the Quran was “Iqra” which means “read”. Allah is sending us a direct message. We are encouraged to read, read, read! We should read every and anything we can get our hands on, as long as its halal. We should be learning from the cradle to the grave.</span>

</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">While what we deem traditionally as Islamic knowledge is at the forefront of what we should know, it is useful for us to realise that Allah is the creator of all things. So, when we are at school and are learning about plateaus and volcanoes in geography, or about protons, neutrons and electrons in chemistry, we are learning about the world in which Allah created us and we should not disregard the importance of this knowledge <i><span style="color:red;">rather as Muslims we become more aware of the majesty of Allah’s power and grandeur.</span></i></span>

</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">Research has shown that when you smile, your body releases endorphins which automatically make you happier, and in a brighter mood. Smiles are like high-fives to your immune system; your whole body thanks you just for smiling. The endorphins released during a smile also act as natural pain killers, so when you’re in physical, emotional or mental anguish, try smiling and see the difference it makes! </span>

<div style="line-height:150%;">

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">Smiling is Sunnah as well! <div style="line-height:150%;">

</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">In Islam, family matters. They are the people who will be there for you no matter what happens. They love you unconditionally and we all have a duty to keep our family relations in good order. We are taught to treat our parents with respect and to treat our children with kindness while leading them on the right path of Allah. Having good relationships with our family reduces stress and confusion which at times ages us and makes us unhealthy. We need to be positive and mend all broken relationships in order to have a truly successful and healthy life.</span>

	<b><span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">6. Feed your emotions</span></b>
</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">

</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">Contrary to popular belief, emotions are not a sign of weakness. It is actually a strength, in that it allows us to handle every and any type of situation thrown at us. We are not mere robots and we need to embrace that. Knowing ourselves allows us to embrace ourselves for who we are and to accept the way we feel. </span>
</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">

</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">Emotions are given their due place of importance in all Islamic teachings as fundamental elements of the human soul. Islam teaches moderation in everything, aiming to create equilibrium so that one is always at peace with one’s self, the universe, and most importantly, Allah. </span>
</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">

</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<i><span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;color:red;">In Islam, the concept of managing emotions is a pretty easy and simple one. The whole concept sums up in two easy points: looking at the people below us in worldly matters and looking at the people above us in religious matters.</span></i>
</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">

</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">This allows us to be focused and content with what we have, and to know where we are headed, rather than shy away from what we experience or feel inadequate about what we do possess.</span>
</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">

</div>

<div style="line-height:150%;">
	<span style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:sans-serif;">Staying healthy can be really easy. All we need to do is stay positive and implement these few steps and we will, Inshallah, be on our way to a more healthy lifestyle!</span>

		<span style="border:0px;color:#000000;font-size:12pt;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">Rasulullaah (SAW) advised people to avoid sitting in direct sunlight because it spoils the clothing, causes a person to smell with perspiration and also causes suppressed illness to surface [Mustadrak 8264, from Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Abbaas (RA)]</span>
	</p>

	<p style="border:0px;font-size:14px;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">
		<span style="border:0px;color:#000000;font-size:12pt;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">Hadhrat Umar Ibn Khattaab (Radhiyallahu anhu), wrote a letter to all his governors in distant lands in which he ordered the Muslims with two essential acts:</span>
	</p>

	<p style="border:0px;font-size:14px;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">
		<span style="border:0px;color:#000000;font-size:12pt;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">1. Do not avoid sunshine. Sunshine is our bath.</span>

		<span style="border:0px;color:#000000;font-size:12pt;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">2. Do not mount your horses like the Ajam (kuffaar).</span>

	</p>

	<p style="border:0px;font-size:14px;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">
		<span style="border:0px;color:#000000;font-size:12pt;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">The hadith discouraging sunlight applies to excessive exposure. Sitting and sleeping in sunlight for prolonged periods are harmful. Even western experts have warned of the deceases prolonged sun-tanning can cause.</span>
	</p>

	<p style="border:0px;font-size:14px;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">
		<span style="border:0px;color:#000000;font-size:12pt;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">The type of exposing the body to sunlight as is the practice of western kuffaar on beaches where they lag in the sun for tanning purposes is harmful.</span>
	</p>

	<p style="border:0px;font-size:14px;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">
		<span style="border:0px;color:#000000;font-size:12pt;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">On the other hand, hadhrat Umar Radhiallahu Anhu’s advice relates to everyday work and activity. His advice was for the Sahabah who had </span><span style="border:0px;color:#000000;font-size:12pt;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">settled in fertile lands where the way of life was comfortable, unlike the difficult harsh conditions of Makkah and Madinah. He was cautioning the Sahabah of becoming accustomed to the easy and </span><span style="border:0px;color:#000000;font-size:12pt;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">comfortable way of life of the Ajam.</span>
	</p>

	<p style="border:0px;font-size:14px;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">
		<span style="border:0px;color:#000000;font-size:12pt;padding:0px;vertical-align:baseline;">They were primarily on Jihaad campaigns which required a robust lifestyle. Addiction of the comforts of the Ajam lifestyle would impact negatively on their Jihaad campaigns in rough weather conditions. His advice was simply to maintain the rugged lifestyle of the desert which was their home.</span>

<p style="color:#333333;font-size:15px;text-align:justify;">
	<strong>10 Foods which are beneficial for Dental Health</strong>
</p>

<p style="color:#333333;font-size:15px;text-align:justify;">

</p>

<p style="color:#333333;font-size:15px;text-align:justify;">
	<strong>Cheese –</strong><span> </span>Cheese is rich in calcium and thus helps protect teeth by re-mineralizing the enamel which is essential to avoid cavities. Thus it is recommended that one should eat cheese at the end of the meal and also purchase a brand that has high calcium content.
</p>

<p style="color:#333333;font-size:15px;text-align:justify;">
	<strong>Fish –</strong><span> </span>Fish contain fluoride, which strengthens the enamel and helps fight cavities. In fact, fluoride also protects the teeth by making them more resistant to the attacks of bacteria that are present in dental plaque. It is recommended to add fish in your diet twice a week.
</p>

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,51);font-size:15px;">
	<strong>Green vegetables –</strong><span> </span>Green vegetables contain no sugar and acid thus if one wants to take care of their teeth then they should not hesitate to consume green vegetables. Citrus fruits, apple juice or tomatoes which are generally considered very healthy and rightly so may cause demineralization of the teeth. Finally, green vegetables are often rich in calcium and fluoride and vitamins that are good for the gums.
</p>

<p style="color:#333333;font-size:15px;text-align:justify;">
	<strong>Dark chocolate –</strong><span> </span>This may be a surprise but dark chocolate is not exactly an enemy of one’s teeth. There are tannins in cocoa that have a positive effect on teeth; it can also help neutralize certain bacteria.
</p>

<p style="color:#333333;font-size:15px;text-align:justify;">
	<strong>Butter –</strong><span> </span>Rich in calcium, butter is also beneficial for one’s teeth. Butter can help in the re-mineralization of the enamel. However, only moderate consumption is recommended because of its high lipid content.
</p>

<p style="color:#333333;font-size:15px;text-align:justify;">
	<strong>Meat –</strong><span> </span>Meat is a good for oral health as it does not contain carbohydrates (sugars). It also provides amino acids, vitamins and trace elements. Eating meat also stimulates the production of saliva which plays a protective role for the teeth.
</p>

<p style="color:#333333;font-size:15px;text-align:justify;">
	<strong>Nuts –</strong><span> </span>Nut are rich in calcium and fluoride which is beneficial for the teeth. Also because of the hard texture of nuts they have to be chewed which increase the production of saliva and thus neutralize acids.
</p>

<p style="color:#333333;font-size:15px;text-align:justify;">
	<strong>Cruciferous vegetables –</strong><span> </span>Vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, cauliflower or broccoli are rich in vitamin C, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Thus they not only protect the gums but also help in mineralization of the enamel.
</p>

<p style="color:#333333;font-size:15px;text-align:justify;">
	<strong>Pulses –</strong><span> </span>Pulses like split peas, chickpeas, and dried beans contain fluoride. Fluoride is beneficial for protection against cavities and for the mineralization of teeth.
</p>

<p style="color:#333333;font-size:15px;text-align:justify;">
	<strong>Carrots and Cabbage –</strong><span> </span>Raw carrot and cabbage can also be beneficial for oral health for the simple reason that they promote chewing. Food items that promote chewing enable manual mechanical rubbing which helps remove dental plaque, food debris and bacteria. Also chewing promotes the creation of saliva that neutralizes the acids that have formed in the tooth enamel.

		<span style="border:0px;padding:0px;">‘Chewing sticks prevent tooth decay better than conventional toothpastes’</span>
	</h1>
</div>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:13px;">Nigerian researchers have demonstrated that three local chewing sticks performed better than fluoride-based and conventional toothpastes in preventing tooth decay. The local chewing sticks are: Fagara zanthoxyloides (candlewood or Senegal prickly ash/orin ata in Yoruba), Vernonia amygdalina (bitter leaf) and Massularia accuminata (chewing stick (pako ijebu in Yoruba/atu uhie in Igbo)).Researchers have also shown that one of the chewing sticks, Massularia accuminata, increased testosterone and libido.</span>
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">

</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	The study titled “A Study of the Anticaries Activity of Three Common Chewing Sticks and Two Brands of Toothpaste in South West Nigeria” was published in British Journal of Pharmaceutical Research. The researchers from the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, include: Odeleye Olubola Florence; Okunye Olufemi Lionel; Kesi Christopher; and Abatan Temitope Olubunmi.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	They concluded: “The chewing sticks used in this study showed good antimicrobial activity against the isolates and could provide better care than fluoride toothpastes. The active compounds if isolated would be good caries-controlling components of herbal toothpastes.”
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	The researchers evaluated three common chewing sticks and two brands of toothpaste in southwest Nigeria for the ability to control caries-causing bacteria.<br style="border:0px;padding:0px;">
	With an increase in tooth decay and gum diseases all over the world, there is need to produce oral cleaning agents that will better control caries-causing bacteria. Three common chewing sticks – Fagara zanthoxyloides (FZ), Vernonia amygdalina (VA) and Massularia accuminata (MA)- and two brands of toothpaste- Close Up and Macleans- were evaluated for their anti-caries activities.

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides (Fagara zanthoxyloides) is a glabrous shrub or tree with an English or common name of candlewood or Senegal prickly ash. It is called Orin ata in Yoruba. It belongs to the family Rutaceae. Its chewing sticks are obtained either from the stems or the roots and they give a warm pungent and numbing effect on the palate. These plants have also been reported to possess antisickling, antiparasitic and antiseptic activities and have been known to be used to treat other ailments including toothache, sexual impotence, gonorrhoea, malaria, dysmenorrhoea, urinary and venereal diseases and abdominal pain.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	Veronica amygdaline commonly called bitter leaf, is a perennial shrub belonging to the family Asteraceae. In Nigeria, the Edo calls it oriwo; Hausa, chusar doki (a horse tonic food containing the leaves); fatefate/mayemaye (a food prepared from the leaves); Ibibio, atidot; Igbo, onugbu; Tiv, ityuna; and Yoruba, ewuro. The plant is used as an anti-helminth, anti-malarial, laxative, digestive tonic, appetizer and febrifuge and for the topical treatment of wounds. This plant also has a measure of anti caries activity. The roots and stems of this plant are used as chewing sticks and have been known to possess a measure of anti caries activity.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	Commonly called Chewing stick, Massularia acuminata (synonym Randia acuminata) is of the family Rubiaceae. It is called pako-ijebu and orin-ijebu in Yoruba and atu uhie in Igbo. It grows as a shrub or small tree. The inhibitory properties of the plant are attributed to its phytochemicals, which include saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, tannins and anthraquinones. Massularia acuminata is a traditionally used herb in Yoruba medicine, used as a chewing stick and aphrodisiac; the chewing stick aspect was researched for being an anti-gingivitis agent, and it appears to increase testosterone and libido in research animals.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	According to Handbook of African Medicinal Plants, Second Edition, by Prof Maurice Iwu, Massularia acuminata has been shown to possess significant antimicrobial activity against oral pathogens associated with orodental infections, including Bacteroides gingivalis and B. melaninogenicus. The aqueous extract of the plant has a Microbial Inhibition Concentration (MIC) of 0.5 and 2 ug/ml against Bacteroides gingivalis and B. melaninogenicus, respectively. The adherence of Streptococcus mutans to the surfaces of the teeth was effectively inhibited by a one per cent concentration of the aqueous extract of Massularia.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	On the effect of Massularia acuminata on male reproductive system, the Handbook of African Medicinal Plants noted: “Extracts of the stem at various doses (20-1000 mg/kg) produced a significant increase in testes- body weight ratio, testicular protein, glycogen, sialic acid, cholesterol, testosterone, and luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormone concentrations of male rats throughout the period of administration…”
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	Meanwhile, a study published in the journal Evidence Based Complement Alternative Medicine, have revealed that the aqueous extract of Massularia acuminata stem at the doses of 500 and 1000 mg/kg body weight could be used as a stimulator of sexual behaviour in male rats. The study thus supports the acclaimed aphrodisiac use of the plant in folk medicine of Nigeria. The data obtained revealed that the action of M. acuminata extract was due to the influence on both sexual arousal and performance. “The aphrodisiac effect of the plant extract may be due to the presence of alkaloids, saponins and/or flavonoids through a multitude of central and peripheral means. Work is in progress on the isolation and characterization of the aphrodisiac principle(s) in the plant extract, the actual mechanism of action as well as the toxicity risks of the crude extract and bioactive agent(s),” the researchers noted.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	Meanwhile, according to the study on local chewing sticks, fifty isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, one of the bacteria often implicated in dental caries, isolated from patients presenting with various dental problems at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria were obtained from the Medical Microbiology Department of the Hospital.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	The isolates were challenged with the toothpastes, undiluted, as well as ethanol and aqueous extracts of the chewing sticks using the agar cup diffusion method. The chewing sticks were also screened for secondary metabolites using standard procedures.The results showed that the ethanol extracts of Fagara zanthoxyloides (FZ) showed the highest anti-caries activity followed by Vernonia amygdalina (VA) and then Massularia acuminata (MA). 43 isolates (86 per cent) were sensitive to the ethanol extract of Fagara zanthoxyloides while 36 (72 per cent) and 25 (50 per cent) were sensitive to Vernonia amygdalina and Massularia acuminata respectively.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	“Both brands of toothpaste were inferior to the ethanol extracts of all the chewing sticks in anti-caries activity. Only 15 (30 per cent) and 20 (40 per cent) of the isolates were sensitive to Close up and Macleans respectively. 16 (32 per cent), 14 (28 per cent) and 10 (20 per cent) of the isolates were sensitive to the aqueous extracts of FZ, MA and VA respectively.” The researchers concluded: “The active constituents in the ethanol extracts of the chewing sticks will be useful as anti caries components of herbal toothpastes which are becoming common in the market.”
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	Until now, some of these chewing sticks have been shown to possess varying degrees of antimicrobial activity against oral microbial flora which indicates therefore, that the chewing sticks, in addition to providing mechanical stimulation of the gums, also destroy microbes, a feature which is absent in the common toothpaste and brush method. This advantage of the chewing sticks over the conventional toothpaste and brush could explain why many Africans have strong teeth.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	The extracts of some chewing sticks have been demonstrated to have anti-plaque and antimicrobial activities against certain oral bacteria like Streptococcus mutans, Bacteroides gingivitis and oral anaerobes commonly implicated in dental caries and orodental infections. The researchers added: “Chewing sticks therefore can safeguard against dental problems, which is probably the reason why dental caries (decay) is not rampant in certain parts of Nigeria where the use of chewing sticks is frequent. Thus, the World Health Organization has encouraged the use of chewing sticks. In Nigeria, about 80-90 per cent of the population in rural areas use chewing sticks, mainly because they are readily available, cheap and efficacious.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	“The cleansing efficacy of chewing sticks is attributed to the mechanical effects of its fibers, the release of beneficial chemicals or a combination of both. Some African chewing sticks have also been reported to contain fluoride ions, silicon, tannic acid, sodium bicarbonate and other natural plaque inhibiting substances that can reduce bacterial colonization and plaque formation.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	The researchers noted: “The presence of saponins and tannins in all the three plants, of anthraquinone in Massularia acuminata and of alkaloids in Fagara zanthoxyloides and Vernonia amygdalina can be linked to the antibacterial activity of the plants. Cowan had shown that antibacterial effect of plant materials was due to the presence of alkaloids, tannins and anthraquinones. It had also been reported by Hagerman et al. that tannins form irreversible complexes with proline- rich proteins which could lead to inhibition of cell wall protein synthesis, a property that may explain the mode of action of the chewing stick extracts used in this work. In addition to its antibacterial effect, saponins also have antifungal properties.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	“The test organism used for this study, Staphylococccus aureus is one of the organisms often implicated in dental caries. It accounts for over 70 per cent of dental caries cases from the research works carried out by Daniyan and Abalaka and had highest proportion in the work of Oluremi et al. It is a pathogenic organism that causes dental infections and are now widely isolated from the oral cavity.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	“The extracts of the three chewing sticks produced a greater activity at a concentration of 100mg/ml than the two brands of toothpaste. This is similar to the work carried out by Antwi-boasiako et al. where the plant extracts of Garcinia kola (bitter kola) had a greater antimicrobial effect than the pepsodent toothpaste used. The ethanol extract of Fagara zanthoxyloides gave a better antimicrobial activity against all the fifty isolates than the ethanol extracts of Vernonia amygdalina and Massularia acuminata. 43 (86 per cent) of the isolates were sensitive to the ethanol extracts of Fagara zanthoxyloides while 36 (72 per cent) and 25 (50 per cent) were sensitive to Vernonia amygdalina and Massularia acuminata respectively.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px;color:#333333;font-size:13px;padding:0px;">
	“The ethanol extracts of the plant materials had a better antimicrobial action than the aqueous extracts which is in accordance with a research work by Isawumi and Rotimi et al. The aqueous extracts of the plant materials showed a poor inhibitory action against the test organism. This may be due to poor solubility nature of the active principles of the plants in water. The two brands of toothpaste had weaker antimicrobial activity than the plant extracts. This is not unexpected since chemical toothpastes owe their antimicrobial property to the presence of fluorides as part of their ingredients. Macleans however had a better inhibitory action than close up.

	<span style="color:rgb(66,66,66);font-size:16px;">Some people suffer from recurring wounds and sores that seize to heal. Apart from the medical treatment of such wounds, the following should also be implemented.</span>
</p>

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;border:0px none;color:#424242;font-size:16px;padding:0px;">
	<p style="border:0px none;padding:0px;">
		Shaykh ‘Ali ibnul Hasan ibn Shaqiq (rahimahullah) reports that he was by Imam ‘Abdullah Ibnul Mubarak (rahimahullah) when a man asked him, “O Abu ‘Abdir Rahman! A boil has emerged on my knee since seven years, I have tried different treatments and consulted many doctors but to no avail.” He (Imam ‘Abdullah Ibnul Mubarak (rahimahullah) said, “<strong style="border:0px none;padding:0px;">Go and look for a place wherein people need water and dig a well there</strong>, I hope that as soon as water gushes forth from there, the blood will stop oozing from your wound.” The man did so and was then cured.” [Bayhaqi]
	</p>

	<p style="border:0px none;padding:0px;">
		After narrating this, Imam Bayhaqi quotes the incident of his Shaykh Imam Hakim Abu ‘Abdillah (rahimahullah) that:
	</p>

	<p style="border:0px none;padding:0px;">

	</p>

	<p style="border:0px none;padding:0px;">
		His face was filled with boils and sores, he had tried many treatments but never got cured. He remained in that state for nearly one year. Then he asked his Ustadh: Imam Abu ‘Uthman as-Sabuni (rahimahullah) to make du’a for him in his gathering on the day of Jumu’ah. He made du’a for him and the people recited ‘amin’ abundantly. The following Jumu’ah, a woman threw a piece of paper in the gathering in which she wrote that she had returned to her house (the previous Friday) and exerted herself in du’a for Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) . That night she saw Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) in her dream telling her, ‘Say to Abu ‘Abdillah (Imam Hakim -rahimahullah-),<span> </span><strong style="border:0px none;padding:0px;">he must donate water for the </strong><b style="border:0px none;padding:0px;">Muslims</b>.’ I (Imam Bayhaqi -rahimahullah-) took that paper to Imam Hakim (rahimahullah). He ordered that a tank for drinking water be built at the door of his house. When its construction completed, he ordered water to be poured into it and ice to be put in the water. The people began to drink and not a week passed before he was cured. The sores vanished and his face returned to its original state. He lived for many years thereafter.

<p>
	As-Salaam alaykum,
</p>

<p>
	The Noble Prophet, <em>Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, </em>said: <em><strong>"The son of Adam never fills a vessel worse than his stomach. The son of Adam only needs a few bites that would sustain him; but if he insists, one third should be reserved for his food, another third for his drink and the last third for his breathing."</strong></em>
</p>

<p>
	Ailments attack and harm our bodies and alter its normal functions due to excess amount of substances we consume.... traceable to overeating or consuming more than what the body needs. When we habitually fill our stomachs with all types of food, some of which may not easily be digestable, we end up with various types of illnesses. On the other-hand, when one eats moderately, the body will get maximum benefit from such moderate diet, as opposed to when one overeats. So, mind the <em>quality </em>and <em>level </em>of that food and drink you eat/consume.
</p>

<p>
	Many Regards.

<div><span style="font-size:18px;"><strong>The Benefits Of Raw Honey</strong></span></div>
<p> </p>
<p>Honey in its natural raw state contains 2 predominant natural sugars (Fructose and Glucose) 11 enzymes, 14 minerals, 21 amino acids, all the vitamins that nutritionists consider necessary for health A,D,K, Rutin, Nicotinic acid, B vitamins, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Pyridoxine and Biotin as well as Ascorbid Acid (Vit. C.).<br><br><b><u>HONEY PROCESSING</u></b><br><br>Most honey sold today has been commercially processed, resulting in enzymes (which help digestion) and vitamins, being destroyed and protein (pollen) being removed. This processing involves heating and filtering through a cloth or fine filter paper. The end product will remain in a liquid state for a long period of time. When it finally starts to granulate, crystals will begin to form at the bottom of the jar, moving upwards (a sure sign of a refined and processed product, despite the label “Pure” Honey).<br><br><b><u>WHAT CAN RAW HONEY DO FOR YOU?</u></b><br><br>Raw Honey was and still is credited with marvelous curative powers. A whole book could be written on all the medicinal uses of honey, from thousands of years of folk medicine to the scientific of the present time.<br><br> </p>
<div>In addition to its age-retarding properties raw honey has been proven to be from beneficial to extraordinary effective in the following:<br><br>* As honey is a pre-digested food (a process done by the bees) it enters the blood stream directly producing energy quickly, unlike refined sugar which has to be digested.<br><br>* Proline, an amino acid in Raw honey is the primary component in collagen. Collagen is the main structure in bones. (Proverbs 16.24—health to the bones) Calcium is also found in two forms in Raw Honey.<br><br>* Increases Haemoglobin count and can prevent or cure Anaemia. It is rich in iron and copper.<br><br>* Is an excellent mild laxative, especially recommended as such for infants and children.<br><br>* Raw Honey will prevent and even cure Botulism Poisoning, because it contains an enzyme called Glucose Oxidase, (this enzyme is easily destroyed with heat). Botulism spores can only develop in the intestines of infants when chronically constipated.<br><br>* It has been shown to be useful in Rheumatic and Arthritic cinditions, especially in combination with Apple Cider Vinegar (Dr D.C. Jarvis).<br><br>* It has been used successful in the treatment of liver and kidney disorders, diseases of the respiratory and digestive tracts, weak heart action, infectious diseases, colds, insomnia, poor circulation, and bad complexion.<br><br>* It is not mere theory, but has been proved that bacteria cannot live in the presence of raw honey, for the reason that raw honey is an excellent source of potassium. The potassium draws from the bacteria the moisture which is essential to the very existence. <p> </p>
<p>Zaitoon (Olive) the sign of peace and friendship in this world has its description in Holy Qur’an Allah Taala says:</p>
<p> </p>
<p><em>“By the fig and olive, And the mount of Sinai, And the city of security, We have indeed created man in the best of moulds, Then do we abase him (to be) the lowest of low, Except such as believe and do righteous deeds for they shall have a reward unfailing, What then, can after this, make you deny the last judgement, Is not Allah the wisest of judges”</em> (The Fig, Surah 95)</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The plant of olive goes up to the height of 3 metres, leaves are bright green and very attractive and the fruits are of bright bluish or violet colour, possesses a metallic taste. It is known from old ages. During the excavation of ancient Egyptian graves, vessels full of olive oil were found with other articles. According to the scholars of Hadith, on subsidence of Toofan-E-Nooh, when water level came down, the first thing on the earth that was seen, was the olive plant.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The plant is extensively found in Asia minor, Palestine, Roman territory, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Italy, North Africa, Algeria, Tunisia, California in America, Mexico, Peru and South zone of Australia. Usually it is imported from Spain, Italy, France, Turkey and Greece. Though olive fruits are very nutritious it is not usually eaten due to its metallic taste. Rather pickles of its fruits are largely consumed in Europe. The fruits preserved in vinegar is imported from Greece and liked very much in Europe and in Arabian countries.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Olive oil is a good preservative for other eatables too. Sardine and other fishes are tinned and preserved in olive oil. The smoke-less burning of olive oil is a peculiar feature, which produces a bright light. Holy Qur’an stresses the importance of Zaitoon on several occasions: (141-M-AlInaam-6), (99-K-AlInaam-6), (11-K-AlNahl-16), (AlNoor-35), (Moominoon).</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Hazrat Sayyed Al-Ansari narrates that the Prophet (Pbuh) said “Eat the olive oil and massage it over your bodies since it is a holy (mubarak) tree.” (Tirmizi, Ibn Maja)</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Hazrat Alqama Bin Amir narrates that Prophet (Pbuh) said, “ There is olive oil for you, eat it, massage over your body, since it is effective in Heamorrhoids (Piles).” (Ibn Al-Jozi, Zanbi)</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Hazrat Aqba Bin Amir narrates that the Prophet (Pbuh) stated, “You have the olive oil from this Holy (mubarak) tree, treat yourself with this, since it cures the Anal fissure (Basoor).” Khalid Bin Saad narrates “I came to Madinah with Ghalib Bin Al Jabr. Ghalib became ill during the journey. Ibn Abi Ateeq came to see him and told a narration from Hazrat Aisha that the Prophet (Pbuh) told about the cure in Kalonji. We crushed a few seeds of Kalonji and mixed it with olive oil and dropped in both nostrils, after which Ghalib became healthy.” (Ibn Maja, Bukhari)</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Hazrath Abu Hurairah (t) narrates that the Prophet (Pbuh) stated, “ Eat the olive oil and apply it (locally), since there is cure for seventy diseases in it, one of them is Leprosy.” (Abu Naim)</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Hazrat Zaid Bin Arqam narrates “ We have been directed by the Prophet (Pbuh) that we should treat the Pleurisy with Qust-e-Behri (Qust Sheerin) and olive oil.” (Tirmizi, sanadeAhmed, Ibn Maja)</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Olive oil has a place in Govt Pharmacopoca of USA and Britain (British Pharmacopoca). Both of these countries have given prime importance to olive oil for the treatment of various ailments and have fixed standard parameters to evaluate its purity.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>It contains Palmatic Acid, Oleic Acid, Linoleic Acid, Steanic Acid, Myristic Acid and Glycerides. It is not dissolved in water but in Alcohol, Ether, Chloroform and Liquid Paraffin.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The adulterant very often used in the olive are of the seeds of Tea Plant, Arachis oil in the market samples of olive oil. Sometimes Machine Gun oil and refined Mobile oil are also found.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Olive oil is extracted from the ripened fruits. The unripe and over ripe fruits contain less amount of the oil. The fruits are processed three times. Successively, the first round oil is the best in quality, golden in colour, with a light fragrance and known as virgin oil. Some varieties of olive oil remained unchanged in its effectiveness for years together. It contains therapeutic potential even if it is a thousand years old. Despite the prime importance and holiness given by Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) no work has been done to find out its efficacy for the ailments other than the Haemorrhoids, Anal fissure, Skin diseases, pleurisy and leprosy, which are already described by the Prophet (Pbuh) , whereas the Prophet (Pbuh) himself says us that it contains cure for seventy diseases.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>According to Ibn Al-Qayyim the red coloured oil is better than blackish one. It is an exhilarant, glows up the facial complexion, provides prevention against poisons, regulates the digestive process, expels the intestinal parasites, makes the hair lustrous and minimises the ageing problems. The massage of olive oil with common salt over the gums is a remedy for several diseases of gums and teeth. The local application of olive oil or the water extracted from the crushed olive oil leaves is effective on boils, rashes and itching. The chronic ulcers and boils, which show difficult healing condition, are healed up with the use of olive oil locally.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>According to Zahbi it strengthens the hairs and body, hence could be used as a good tonic in old age problems and to delay the ageing process. It is also useful in sexual weakness. Combination of normal saline with olive oil is highly effective in burns cases.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The decotion of olive leaves in water is effective against mouth and lips ulcers and allergic dermatitis also. The concentrated aquous extract of olive leaves and fruits is very effective against dental cavities and application of this solution shows very good effects on Leukoplaquea in mouth. This solution is applied with vinegar on Alopecia, grows the hair and removes the Alopecia. It is also stated that the local application of this extract removes the scars of small pox and boils. The powder of seeds mixed with butter is effective in brittle nails. The pickles prepared from olive fruits is a good appetizer and removes constipation. The smashed leaves are applied locally to check excessive perspiration. The water extracted from the leaves with honey is used as Ear drops and effective in various Ear ailments. The oil procured by burning of olive wood is effective against all fungal infection viz, Ringworm, T.versicolor etc. in addition to Eczema, Psoriasis, Dandruff and Alopecia. The local application of olive oil on scalp is highly effective against dandruff. It grows the hairs and checks, the loss of hair. The application of olive oil in eyes relieves the inflammation.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The massage of olive oil over the body tones up the muscles and organs, it relieves muscular pains. Some physicians also advocate the massage of olive oil for epilepsy. It relieves the Sciatic and arthritis. The ointment prepared from olive oil are very good healing agents. It heals the sinus and fistula very quickly. 25ml of olive oil mixed with 250ml of barley water, if taken internally, is highly effective against chronic constipation. It is good Diuretic, hence is used in Ascites. It also removes the kidney stones.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>A conventional regimen is also available comprising of olive oil and other herbal drugs having potential against the Gall bladder stones. It is stated that this regimen dissolves and expels the Gall bladder stone.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>In view of the researchs carried out in USA and England, it is concluded that it is a good nourishing diet during the ailments of kidney, where nitrogen containing food/proteins in take is contra indicated. Since, the Prophet (Pbuh) stated that it is a good remedy for Anal fissure, hence for the same complaint patients were advised to take two spoonful of olive oil at bedtime and an ointment was applied on fissure locally at retiring and in morning, prepared from 8 spoonfuls of olive oil and 2 spoonfuls of ground henna leaves. This showed very good effects against the problem. It is a good tonic for hair and maintains the lustre. Its combination with other prescribed drugs of Tibb-al-Nabwi is a good remedy for Psoriasis and Eczema. The impressions of several doctors practising in middle east and North Africa reveal that no case was detected of Gastro Intestinal Carcinoma, among those who were used to consuming olive oil. Japanese doctors also endorse this fact and have the opinion that olive oil prevents the incidence of Carcinoma in G.I.T.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The Prophet (Pbuh) stated that it is a good remedy for intestinal inflammations. Therefore it was used in the cases of G.I.T ulcers and found very much effective. It is also observed that no remedy equates the benefits of olive oil in hyper acidity and gas troubles.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The Prophet (Pbuh) recommended the use of olive oil in Pleurisy. Keeping this in view olive oil was administered in various diseases of Respiratory tract and it was observed that the regular users of olive oil were least affected with common cold and coryzha and pneumonia.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The clinical experiences of well qualified and highly established doctors in the profession who take a keen insight in Prophet’s medicine reveal that olive oil is a good supportive treatment in Tubercular infection of either sites. According to a narration of Kahlid Bin Saad in Ibn Maja, one spoonful of Kalonji was pulverised and mixed with 12 spoonful of olive oil. This suggestion was dropped into the nostrils morning and evening for the cases of chronic cold and epistaxis. The results were found highly positive.</p>

<p><span style="font-size:18px;"><strong>Pain Killers Kill More Than Pain</strong></span></p>
<p> </p>
<p>Bodily pain, no matter how excruciating and uncomfortable, is actually our friend … not our enemy. Once you understand this, you will realize that most types of pain are actually beneficial for us. They signal that the body is either lacking in some nutrients, needs some relaxation, water or sleep, has been injured at a certain place and indicates the rate of recovery, or some muscle or organ needs healing. Bodily pain indicates life, whilst it’s absence denotes loss of life or limb. It’s very similar to the red light found on ones electric kettle at home. When the water is boiling, the switch indicates danger, likewise, when the body is ailing, pain signals danger. Will anyone disconnect the red light on their kettle when the water boils? No, similarly we should not be rushing to pop pills when experiencing any type of pain without addressing its root cause.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>This is simple logic, but many have not paid heed to it – with disastrous consequences to their health. Many people simply pull out their “red light”, and abuse their bodies by continuously popping pills until they become hopelessly addicted to them. Those who eventually overcome their addiction, suddenly find that they have an additional problem: they cannot sleep without them and their liver has been poisoned. There are some people who pop up to 100 pills a day! They spend more money on pain management than on their entire family’s monthly grocery bills. For such people, their jobs or their busy businesses schedules is more important than their health. What they fail to realize is that no amount of doctors, hospitals or money will be able to reverse the long-term damage upon their health when they eventually decide to address the issue. Their only solution would be even more pills, expensive rehabilitation, and maybe even surgery.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Unlike banned substances, many people do not intentionally become addicted to legal pain killers. They are victims of unfortunate circumstances who do not take the trouble of finding out of the various safer options of pain management and elimination. Let’s take the case of Nadeem*:  <em>“I got a prescription for Iboprofen* when I hurt my back in an accident. I was supposed to take two pills twice a day, but I was worried that it wouldn’t be enough. So I took a few more, just to make sure it worked. Iboprofen did more than just dull the pain. I really enjoyed how it made me feel. I could relax and worry less about my family and business. I also got really tired, though. I had to drag myself around some days. When my prescription ran out, I became very sick. Even though it was winter, I sweated like it was summer. And my whole body was in pain, much worse than my back pain. I knew that there was another problem and I was scared.</em></p>
<p> </p>
<p><em>I started going to many different doctors to get more prescriptions. I’d lie and say that I was in terrible pain—worse than what I actually felt. I needed more and more pills to feel OK—more than one doctor would ever prescribe. Many doctors and pharmacists were greedy, so they willingly helped me out for cash. I’d fill the different prescriptions at different pharmacies. Sometimes I’d drive for hours to find a store where they didn’t know me. At home, my wife was upset because I was ignoring our business. </em></p>
<p> </p>
<p><em>Then one day I was at a pharmacy with my wife, and the pharmacist said she wouldn’t fill my prescription. The computer records showed I had already bought a ton of painkillers in a short time at several different stores, and she would get into trouble. I was embarrassed as my wife witnessed all this, but I was even more scared of getting sick like I did the last time I ran out of pills. The pharmacist knew what I was thinking. She gave my wife the name of a medicine I could take to get over my addiction.</em></p>
<p> </p>
<p><em>If I had been alone, I would have thrown her advice out of the window and just tried to get another prescription filled somewhere else. My wife is a tough woman, and she loves me, so she assisted me on my road to recovery.”</em></p>
<p><em> </em></p>
<p>So how did Nadeem end up as a drug junky for just wanting to eliminate his pain?  Many people suffering from arthritis, menstrual cramps, headaches, post-surgery pain management, and chronic back pain are just like Nadeem. An innocent pill has made them addicts and created dozens of other illnesses for them for which Western medicine has no solution. To answer this question, Ohio State University researchers did some digging and found that a popular ingredient found in most pain killers – acetaminophen – destroys positive emotions. It alters their emotional and evaluative processing, turning compassionate people into cold emotionless zombies. Prescription drugs containing aspirin have been known to increase one’s risk of heart failure, upper gastrointestinal complications, and easy bruising – leading to slow healing, poor blood circulation and maybe even gangrene.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>In South Africa, nearly 45 percent of people seeking treatment for prescription medicine dependence reported the use of opioid-containing painkillers. “<em>Much is said about the illegal opiate heroin, but dependency on over-the-counter medicines (including cough medicines) containing opiates like codeine is actually overtaking heroin</em>,” says Dr Hash Ramjee, a specialist in substance abuse who works for the Houghton House group of treatment centres.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Codeine causes depressed breathing, which can be lethal in cases of overdose or combinations with other drugs. Combinations of codeine with other pills can also do serious damage to kidneys, liver and/or stomach. “<em>Opioids slow down intestinal and bowel movements, creating a blockage</em>,” explains Ramjee.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>As per the enclosed leaflet contained in most painkillers, they should not be taken for more than 10 days. Howevver, one of the first signs of addiction is becoming preoccupied with two things: when can you take your next dose and whether your supply is enough. You then start increasing the amounts your doctor prescribed. When your doctor refuses to prescribe more, you my even forge prescriptions and even seriously hurt yourself so you can be admitted to hospital just to get a new prescription! Very little difference then remains between you and an abuser of hard drugs.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>But there is hope for victims. Remember that every time you pop a pill, it clogs up your liver for 60 days, and this makes the road to recovery more difficult. You need to realize that you have to STOP this habit, and gradually decrease the amount of pills over a period of time. There are many safer and more permanent measures of pain elimination, which will enable you to improve the quality of your life and your worship (ibaadat).</p>
<p> </p>
<p>One of the best pain relievers is to do regular Cupping (Hijaamah) with a qualified therapist. Cupping is not only a Sunnah, but it rids the body of toxic blood in which pain and inflammation reside. Herbal mixtures, drinks and ointments made from natural capsaicin, ginger or turmeric help stop inflammation with no side effects at all. These herbs work by depleting substance P – a compound that conveys the pain sensation from the peripheral to the central nervous system. Holy Basil and Kava Kava are also excellent pain relievers. Then essential fish oils such as Cod Liver Oil and Omega 3 Fatty Acids breaks down into hormone-like chemicals called prostaglandins in the body, which also reduce inflammation.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>These alternatives may take a little longer to produce results, but the results would be permanent. Have patience and go through with it. If not, your pain will be  nothing but a source of continuing agony for you, and a source of easy income for the pharmaceutical companies. Remember, pain killers kill more than pain. They kill your spirit too.</p>

<p><strong><span style="color:#000080;"><span style="font-size:18px;">Me versus diabetes: The winner is....my remembrance of Allah</span></span></strong></p>
<p> </p>
<div>
<strong><span style="color:#000080;">Round One: In the Hospital</span></strong><p>I was diagnosed eight years ago with diabetes on January 15. I was 11 and the idea of sticking needles in me, testing my blood sugar, monitoring what I ate and visiting my doctor every three months, was not my idea of fun.<br><br>I sat in the hospital room for three days, angry with the world, feeling sorry for myself, and wondering what I had done wrong. Perhaps this is the natural reaction of people diagnosed with a life altering disease, but Alhamdu lillah, (all Praise be to God), this attitude did not last long.<br>My friend arrived with a giant stuffed-animal and wished me well. I, in return, promised her that I would keep the stuffed toy forever and take care of it to remember her kindness.<br><br>Hours later, as I had moved my IV cart to a quiet place in the hospital to make Salat (prayer). I sat in supplication realizing that I, like the stuffed animal, had been given life, a body, health, a brain, and everything else as a gift from Allah. I realized that it was up to me to take care of Allah's gift, and that this disease was simply a test from Allah to see if my Iman, my faith, was stronger than my dislike of needles and blood.<br><br>At the moment, I accepted the fact that I had to take care of my health and my body, I had to take care of Allah's gift and not refuse it in self pity. In the Quran it says, "On no soul does Allah place a burden greater than it can bear" (2:286). Feeling almost honored that Allah knew I could handle this obstacle, I went to find the other sick children and see if I could help cheer them up.<br><br>As I entered the play area on the third floor I asked a group of kids if I could join them in their game of Clue. Without hesitation they all slid over to make room for me. As I sat down, the little boy whose place I had taken handed me a plug and said, "could you please plug me in, I'm not feeling so good". I looked at his bald head and the massive number of tubes in his arm as I humbly obliged and tearfully thanked Allah, for all the mercy He had shown me.<br><br>I knew that I had not beat diabetes, but I had not lost either. Rather, I had learned that my ability to live with this disease was dependent upon my faith in Allah.</p>
<p> </p>
<strong><span style="color:#000080;">Round Two: The Battle of Fitting In</span></strong><p>I left the hospital feeling confident and in control. However, a couple of years later I realized that I was putting my health and my diabetes on a back shelf to junior high and high school life. While I still strove to please and remember Allah at all times, the connection I had between my health and my relationship with Allah had greatly weakened.<br><br>I found ways to remain healthy, and not let my diabetes take precedence, but at the same time I was not in "good health". I was doing the minimum requirements of taking four shots of insulin a day, but I was not testing my blood sugar. I would eat my required number of meals, but I would not eat the right foods or eat at the right times.<br><br>One night, as I sat talking with my friends, the topic of health and life came up. Our friend's dad had just passed away and we were remarking how fragile we really are. We took turns telling stories of people we knew who had to have their feet amputated, their kidneys replaced, had lost their eyesight and who had taken for granted the manageability of their health. The examples were all about people with diabetes who had failed to take responsibility and take care of their life, their life which was a gift, a beautiful gift, a gift I was taking for granted.<br><br>The next day I found myself in second period ceramics listening to a demonstration on glazing when I felt my body go numb. I woke up moments later on the ground, bleeding and surrounded by bits of broken pots. I had gone into what is known as a "diabetic coma". My blood sugar had gotten so low that I passed out.<br><br>As I was helped to the nurse's office, the only thing on my mind was how lucky I was. It did not take the loss of a limb or the loss of sight to remind me that I had a responsibility to myself and to Allah to cherish and care for my health in this world. When my mom came to get me, I looked at her and said, "I think it's a hint, I've got to do better than this, and I can do better".<br><br>Round two tossed me some bloody blows, but I still stood undefeated by my diabetes through the help of Allah and the remembrance of His all-knowing wisdom, I was given another chance. When one remembers Allah, He remembers them. I spent the night thanking Allah for not giving up on me when I had given up on myself.</p>
<p> </p>
<strong><span style="color:#000080;">Round Three: Internal Apathy </span></strong><p>Now that I'm in college, I find that my parents no longer bother me about taking care of my diabetes. My doctor no longer scolds me for not keeping written records of my medication doses and my friends no longer treat me like I am ill. I guess that is what it means to be mature . . . it means you begin to take responsibility for your own decisions, choices and actions.<br><br>Early last semester, I began to forget that as a Muslim I had a responsibility to take care of my health. My apathy toward the finer points of diabetic care prompted a friend to ask me what right I had to do this to myself. I had no answer at the time, nor do I have one now.<br>The truth is, I have no excuse for not caring. Surah Rahman asks, "which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?" To say that I deny nothing would mean that my health held a top priority in my life. With technology, social acceptance of diabetes and the knowledge that many had it far worse, I realized I could not deny Allah, I could not deny Islam, because I was too stubborn and lazy to take care of my disease.<br><br>As I work toward better control, I remind myself of the Hadith: "the likeness of the one who remembers his Lord and the one who does not remember Him is like that of a living to a dead person" (Bukhari). If I forget my health, I die. If I forget Allah, I am already dead.<br><br>Round three is still in action, Allah has undoubtedly granted me assistance, mercy and blessings. And I must find a way to take care of my body and not deny myself further the gifts of Allah or else I know I will lose the battle.</p>

<p>Assalamu Alaykum </p>
<p> </p>
<p>My niece suddenly wakes up screaming at night. She gets shivers and chills, afraid of dark, bugs, lizard and cat or any other animal she sees at night. </p>
<p>I guess she sees frightful dreams, she's still quite young and can't express what she's seeing in her dreams.</p>
<p>She just shouts out at a perceived threat, uttering phrases like, "Baw are going to get me!" </p>
<p>"Baw" means ghost in her language. Nothing seems to comfort her. We're worried how to break this pattern as this happens almost every night.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Have anyone got any experience of this or any suggestions please?</p>
